Soccer Caps Off Non-Conference Play with Shutout of Villanova

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 6 Florida State soccer (6-2-0) wrapped up non-conference play Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 win over Villanova. (3-3-1)

“I thought overall it was a good solid game for us,” said head coach Mark Krikorian. We played against a really well coach organized team that played some really attractive soccer. For us coming on the road and finding a win to end the non-conference segment of the season is good. We will now turn our attention to the ACC.”

For the second time, this season the Noles put at least five on the board with the 5-0 shutout of the Wildcats. FSU outshot Villanova 27-5 with 12 of their 27 shots on goal.

The Noles got their first shot off in the seventh minute as Malia Berkely got one on goal but it was saved. 30 seconds later the Seminoles were fouled in the box resulting in a penalty kick taken by Abbey Newton. Newton converted for her second goal of the season to get the Seminoles on the board.

Over the next 15 minutes, FSU got six shots off but could not convert. They finally capitalized in the 22nd minutes on Yujie Zhao’s first of two goals, this one assisted by Jenna Nighswonger.

Florida State came out with two shots in the first two minutes of the second half before converting on their third goal in the 53rd minute. Deyna Castellanos got her team-leading fifth goal on assists from Abbey Newton and Jenna Nighswonger.

In the 62nd minute, Zhao put the Noles up 4-0 with her second goal of the afternoon. It was her third of the season and made her the third Seminole to have a multi-goal game in 2019.

Malia Berkely scored her second goal of the season in the 74th minute to cap off the Seminole scoring fest.

The Seminoles have now outscored their opponents 14-3 in their last four appearances.

Florida State is back home next week for one game against Boston College on Thursday, September 19. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
