Varjasi Clocks Season Best at NCAAs

Minneapolis, Minn. – All four student-athlete representing the No. 22 Florida State men’s swimming and diving team were in action at the 2023 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday.
“We had another good day,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “We’re looking to close out the season strong tomorrow.”
Peter Varjasi and Yordan Yanchev competed in the 200 free, while Arijus Pavlidi swam the 100 back. Tazman Abramowicz made his fifth appearance at the NCAA Championships, competing in the men’s 3-meter springboard.
Varjasi clocked a season-best in the 200 free, touching at 1:34.16 and Yanchev followed at 1:34.88. Varjasi is scheduled to compete in the 100 free, while Yanchev is entered in the 1650 free.
Pavlidi swam a time of 46.91 in the 100 back, touching for 39th place. Pavlidi is set to swim his specialty, the 200 back on Saturday.
Abramowicz received marks between 5.0-7.0 on each of his six dives to score 336.60 for 30th place. He will compete in platform on Saturday to close out his collegiate career.
“Tazman started off strong and gave himself a chance,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “He fought a really hard fight just to get here. He was prepared and ready to go. He was a just little bit off and that was the difference.”
Prelims will start at 11 a.m., and the top 16 swimmers in each race will advance to finals at 7 p.m. The top eight divers will compete at finals, while the divers that finish ninth through 16th will compete again immediately after prelims. The early heats of the 1650 are scheduled for 4:45 p.m.
