Vear, Abramowicz Punch Tickets to NCAAs

Knoxville, Tenn. – Florida State divers Samantha Vear and Tazman Abramowicz punched their tickets to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Monday at the Zone B Diving Championships at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center.
Vear placed seventh in the women’s 1-meter competition, while Abramowicz finished eighth in the men’s 3-meter event.
Vear advances to her first NCAAs and will join teammates Julia Mansson, Edith Jernstedt, Maddy Huggins, Anna Metzler along with the 200 medley relay next week back in Knoxville. Abramowicz qualified for the fifth time in his career and is the first Seminole to earn a spot in the men’s meet, which will take place March 22-25 in Minneapolis, Minn.
“It was a great day today,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “Sammy loves to compete. She’s in her element at these meets and it showed today. It was fun to watch her work. Tazman has now made NCAAs representing three different schools. He had a bad injury earlier this year and he clawed his way back to this. The field in this zone is brutal. It’s so talented and after just missing qualifying yesterday, he kept his head together and made it today.”
Vear put together a solid prelim round, scoring all her dives between 5.0-7.0 for a total of 292.05 for seventh place.
In finals, Vear improved her first two dives and jumped to sixth place after the third round, however, a mishap in the fourth dropped her to eighth. Despite the miss, Vear was still in control of a qualifying spot.
The Conroe, Texas native, got back on track and finished strong, scoring above 50 points on her final two dives to take seventh at 578.80.
Over the course of 12 dives, Abramowicz stayed consistent and didn’t register a miss. All of his dives received marks of 5.5 or higher.
Out of prelims, Abramowicz tied for seventh place with a score of 370.40. In finals, Abramowicz received marks between 6.5-7.5, improving his score by 23 points for a total of 763.95. Abramowicz beat out the ninth-place diver by just under 10 points for the final qualifying spot.
His final round score of 393.55 was a season-best and was his highest since the Zone D Championships in 2022 (394.95).
David Vargas also qualified for the final in 10th place out of prelims at 356.90, which was also his best of the season. In finals, Vargas had five dives that scored 55 points or higher, which kept him in the hunt for a qualifying spot. Vargas finished 14th with a score of 705.85.
“David has been battling injuries all year,” Proctor added. “He didn’t go to ACCs and he just showed up here with no misses. He just has some work with the little things, but he belongs at this level. All of these guys will be ready for tower tomorrow.”
Jessica Buntman also competed in the women’s 1-meter event, finishing 33rd with a score of 236.35.
“Jessica did a good job today,” Proctor said. “She’s really developed a lot over the last two years and she made her way to this meet. I’m proud of her.”
Jesco Helling and Darwin Nolasco also dove in a tough men’s 3-meter field. Helling placed 21st (330.45) and Nolasco finished 27th (302.10).
Women’s 3-meter will start at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, followed by men’s platform at 4 p.m. The top 18 divers in each event will advance to finals. With scores carrying over, the top nine will move on to the NCAA Championships.
