Hall of Fame Class: 1986 (Men's Track and Field)
Walter McCoy made an immediate impact as a freshman in 1978 winning the NCAA Championship in the 600 yard indoors. It would be the first of many accomplishments for one of Florida States all-time great athletes. McCoy went on to make All-American on 12 different occasions when combining both outdoor and indoor seasons. He also anchored FSU’s NCAA Champion mile relay team in 1980. His school-record time of 44.99 in the 400 meters set in 1981 still held as the calendar turned to the year 2000. McCoy earned a spot on the United States Olympic team in both 1980 and 1984 and won a gold medal as a member of the 4 X 100 relay team in 1984.
