WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Thursday marks the 51st meeting between the Seminoles (12-2, 1-0) and 13th-ranked Tar Heels (9-2, 0-0). Florida State has won six of the last seven matchups, although UNC won the most recent meeting, 64-49, on Feb. 20, 2022, in Tallahassee.
  • Through FSU’s first 14 games comparing this season to last year, its offense has made an enormous leap. This season, the Seminoles are averaging 87.9 points per game, making 7.4 3-point field goals and averaging 17.4 makes from the line per game in a more aggressive and fast-paced offense. Last year, FSU averaged 70.0 points, made 5.1 3s per game and made 11.1 free throws through its first 14 games.
  • Florida State is trying to start 2-0 in ACC play for the first time since the 2019-20 season. FSU’s current 12-2 start is also its best 14-game start since the 2019-20 year when it began the season 13-1.
  • The Seminoles’ last visit to Chapel Hill came in a 61-51 win when Brooke Wyckoff was the Interim Head Coach on Feb. 4, 2021. The only current player who earned floor time in that win was graduate forward Valencia Myers.
  • Freshman guard Ta’Niya Latson was recently named a Top 25 player in the nation by ESPN. The Miami, Fla., native leads the conference in scoring by +5.3 points per game at 25.0 points per game. Louisville’s Hailey Van Lith is second in the league at 19.7 points.
  • The Seminoles are coming off an entertaining 92-85 win in their ACC opener vs. Miami at home. Sophomore forward Makayla Timpson scored 19 of her career-high 25 points vs. the Hurricanes in the second half.
  • Florida State leads the ACC and is second nationally with 7.0 blocked shots per game. FSU has nine games this season with seven or more blocked shots, including four of its last five contests.
  • The Seminoles made 23-of-25 free throw attempts last game vs. the Hurricanes. FSU is 13th nationally averaging 23.4 attempts.
  • The Seminoles lead the ACC and rank fifth in the country averaging 87.9 points per game. Their lowest scoring output this year was in a 75-70 win over Georgia State on Nov. 13.
  • Ta’Niya Latson might be the nation’s most versatile scorer. No other player in the nation ranks in the Top 3 nationally in total points (third; 350), free throws made (second; 105) AND field goals made (third; 242).
  • Florida State goes for its 31st win over an opponent ranked in the Top 15 of the Associated Press Poll. Its last win over an opponent ranked that high came against No. 2 Louisville on Feb. 21, 2021, winning 68-59 at home in what was Head Coach Brooke Wyckoff’s Interim Head Coach year.
  • FSU ranks in the Top 12 nationally in key categories blocks per game (2nd), scoring offense (fifth) and rebounds per game (12th). FSU is also eighth in free throws made per game.
  • The Seminoles own a 93-40 (.699) record vs. ACC opponents over the last eight seasons.
  • FSU is coming off its best 3-point shooting performance of the season against Miami, shooting 60 percent (9-of-15) from downtown. It was FSU’s second-fewest attempts from 3-point range this year.
  • Makayla Timpson’s five double-doubles this season are tied for third in the ACC. She ranks in the Top 10 in the league in rebounding (sixth), blocked shots (second), offensive rebounding (third) and defensive rebounding (eighth).
