Five Noles Competed in the Women’s Collegiate Invitational this Weekend

Malibu, Calif. – Five members of the Florida State women’s tennis team competed in the 2019 Women’s Collegiate Invitational Oct. 2-5 hosted by Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. The tournament featured the top teams from around the nation.  Junior Petra Hule and freshmen Sasha Hill and Mira Stegmann joined seniors Nandini Das and Andrea Garcia representing the Noles this weekend.

Day One
The Seminoles went 2-0 in doubles play to start the opening day of the tournament. Hill/Hule defeated Ashley Lahey/Lisa Zaar of Pepperdine 6-4, while Garcia/Das took down Haley Giavara/Julia Rosenquist (Cal) 7-5 in a comeback victory.

Continuing the momentum from the morning doubles, Hule started the Noles off on a high note in singles as she defeated Anna Bright (Cal) 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. After the opening singles victory, Hule later fell to Pepperdine’s Jessica Failla (6-0, 6-1) and Hill dropped a hard-fought battle 6-4, 6-3 against Alyvia Jones of Michigan.

Day Two
Florida State wrapped up the second day of competition at the Women’s Collegiate Invitational earning two singles victories on Friday.

Following a 0-2 start in doubles, Stegmann was the first to pick up a victory on day two winning 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 over San Diego’s Elizabeth Goldsmith.  Although Hill (6-1, 6-1) and Das (3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2) each dropped a tough match, Garcia finished the day winning 6-7(3), 7-6(6), 6-4 over Katharina Kukaras (USD).

Day Three
The Garnet and Gold started the final day off strong earning a pair of doubles victories.  The FSU duo of Garcia/Das earned an exciting win over UNC’s Sofia Patel/Annika 7-5 after being down 2-5.  Hill and Hule followed with another victory as the pair took down NCAA singles finalist Kellie Chen and Hanna Zhao of Duke (6-4)

Singles started off slow as Hule fell 6-2, 6-2 to Andrea Cerdan (Michigan) and Stegmann fell 6-0, 6-2 to Margaryta Bilotkin (Duke).  Freshmen Hill quickly turned things around with a dominating win over Vanderbilt’s Amanda Meyer 6-3, 6-2.

For the second time this fall season, Das concluded tournament play with a victory.  To close out the Women’s Collegiate Invitational Das won 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 over San Diego’s Katharina Kukaras.
