Howell and Berkely Named MAC Hermann Award Finalists

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The good news continues to come in for the Seminoles as Jaelin Howell and Malia Berkely have been named MAC Hermann Trophy Finalists as announced by the United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club on Wednesday afternoon.

Howell and Berkely mark the third and fourth MAC Hermann Trophy finalists in school history, joining Mami Yamaguchi and Dagny Brynjarsdottir. Yamaguchi took home the award in 2007. They are two of three finalists, joined by Brianna Pinto of North Carolina.

Howell has started in all 14 games for the Seminoles this season as their starting holding midfielder. She has helped anchor a backline that has recorded nine shutouts in 14 games and has only allowed seven goals all season. Howell has also made her presence known on the offensive end as she has scored five goals to go with a pair of assists.

The Lone Tree, Colorado native was rated the No. 1 player by TopDrawerSoccer in the midseason top-100. Howell was named to the All-ACC First Team in the fall and the ACC’s Midfielder of the Year. She was also named to the ACC All-Tournament team as she helped lead the Seminoles to their seventh ACC Tournament title.

Berkely started all 11 games in the fall for the Seminoles, helping them to their seventh ACC Tournament title. She anchored the defensive backline from her center-back position that held opponents to six goals in 11 games. The Seminoles recorded seven shutouts in the fall, including shutouts in the first four games of the season.

The Liberty Township, Ohio native was named a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist in 2019 as well. Berkely was named to the All-ACC First Team and was the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first player in ACC history to win back-to-back Player of the Year honors. In January, Malia signed professionally to play with the French club FC Girondins de Bordeaux

The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. Winners will be announced on May 27 at the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy Press Conference and Banquet taking place at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.
