Seminole Catcher Tony Richie Named As Johnny Bench Award Semi-finalist

Wichita, Kansas – The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced today the list of ten semi-finalists for the 4th Annual Johnny Bench Award. This award is presented annually at the Greater Wichita Sports Banquet to the nation’s top collegiate catcher, as voted on by a panel of sportswriters, sportscasters, Division I coaches and scouts.
The Johnny Bench Award semi-finalists are (in alphabetical order):
Brady Burrill, Michigan State, Senior Josh Ford, Baylor, Sophomore Ryan Garko, Stanford, Senior Chris Grossman, California, Junior Devin Ivany, South Florida, Sophomore Jason Jaramillo, Oklahoma State, Sophomore Colt Morton, North Carolina State, Junior Landon Powell, South Carolina, Junior Tony Richie, Florida State, Junior Brian Rose, Florida, Senior
A committee representing national sportswriters, sportscasters and scouts, narrowed the watch list of thirty-six catchers down to ten semi-finalists.
A comprehensive biography will be created on each of the semi-finalists and sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 3, 2003.
A final vote among the national selection committee will occur during the College World Series. All three finalists will be invited to Wichita for the 6th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 24, 2003 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Wichita. Johnny Bench will present the award to the recipient.
