FSU’s Andreza Santos Named All-ACC First Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced the recipients of its postseason volleyball awards today, and Florida State senior Andreza Santos (Minas Gerais, Brazil/College of Southern Idaho) was named to the All-ACC First Team. Selected by the conference’s 12 head coaches, a total of 18 players were named as First- and Second-Team All-ACC.

Santos is not the only member of her family selected to the All-ACC First Team as her younger sister, Amanda, earned ACC, East Region, and NFCA All-American honors in 2004.

“I think Andreza had a great year,” said Florida State Head Coach Todd Kress. “She was injured and played the entire season with pain throughout her knee. She spent an hour a day in rehab yet she never complained. I think that shows the competitiveness and determination the kid has. Andreza has some special qualities people outside the program may not know about, so that’s what makes this honor so special.”

Santos paced the Seminoles to a 13-17 overall record and 11-11 conference mark in 2005. She led her team in hitting percentage (.278), kills (3.36) and points per game (3.88). Santos hit double-digit kills during 20 matches, including a streak of 12 straight contests. Santos also had 23 aces on the year and averaged 1.20 digs and 0.62 blocks per game.

The ACC All-Freshmen Team highlighted six of the league’s top freshmen with players from Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Virginia represented.

North Carolina senior Dani Nyenhuis was named the ACC Player of the Year. A two-time ACC Player of the Week selection this season, Nyenhuis leads the Tar Heels and ranks eighth in the league with 3.67 kills per game. The outside hitter recorded 19 double-doubles in her last 23 matches and joined both the 1,000 kill and 1,000 dig clubs this season.

Clemson outside hitter Jeannette Abbott, who became the Tigers’ freshman kill leader this season with 515, was tabbed the ACC Freshman of the Year. She is tied for second place for kills by a freshman in a single match, having posted 26 kills on two occasions this season. The Downers Grove, Ill., native ranks second all-time in Clemson annals with 1,512 attempts in a single season.

North Carolina head coach Joe Sagula was named ACC Coach of the Year for the third time in his career and for the first time since 2002. Sagula’s Tar Heels earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship with an 18-4 conference mark this season.
