All-American Jean-Yves Aubone Begins Quest For NCAA Singles Title Wednesday Morning

TULSA, Okla.- Florida State sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone will play Mississippi State‘s Phillippe Frayssinoux in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships on Wednesday, May 21, at at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.  Aubone will team with freshman Clint Bowles in doubles action which begins on Thursday.


“We are excited to get the individual tournament started,” FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said.  “Our guys have been practicing hard and are excited about playing.”


Aubone is currently ranked No. 13 in the country which earned him All-American honors and a 9-16 seed in the tournament.  The Miami Fla. native has a 17-6 record during the dual match season including two victories against top 10 players.  Frayssinoux is ranked No. 49 for the Bulldogs and has a 24-11 record on the season with only one victory against a top 50 opponent.  The winner will play either Robbye Poole of Mississippi or Ohio State‘s Bryan Koniecko on Thursday.


The No. 15-ranked duo of Aubone and Bowles open doubles competition against Rice’s 25th-ranked Ralph Knupfer and Christoph Muller on May 22.  Knupfer and Muller defeated the Seminole pair 8-5 earlier in the season in Houston, Texas.  With one more victory in 2008, Aubone and Bowles will break the single season doubles’ victories record set by Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhof in 2005.  The duo hopes to become Florida State‘s first doubles’ All-Americans since Brian Stanton and Ken McKenzie earned the honor in 1995.


“You have to take it one match at a time because everyone is dangerous,” Hultquist said.  “This is the most entries we’ve had in the individual tournament and it’s a great opportunity for us to see what we can do and hopefully our doubles team can earn All-American honors.”
