Seminole Women’s Golf Team Finishes In 15th Place At NCAA East Regional Championship

GAINESVILLE, Fla. –
Senior All-American Caroline Westrup and freshman Whitney Wenglasz carded identical scores of 74 to lead the Florida State women’s golf team through the third and final round of the 2009 NCAA East Regional Championship at the Mark Bostick Golf Course. The Seminoles, however, finished in 15th place in the team standings and fell just short of qualifying for the NCAA championship round.
The University of Denver, which was led by the individual medalist Dawn Shockley, won the regional championship by four strokes over the University of Alabama. Joining Denver and Alabama in the national championship as representatives of the East Region are Tennessee, Virginia, Tulane, Duke, North Carolina and Georgia. Shockley carded a finished with a one-under par total of 209 to win the regional championship.
Westrup saw her collegiate career come to an end as she finished in a tie for 30th place in the individual standings with an 11-over par total of 221 for the three round event. She carded scores of 73-74-74. Westrup carded two birdies and nine holes of par in her final round as a Seminole.
Westrup closed her career as one of the all-time great golfers in school history and the first to earn All-American honors three times and the first to earn All-ACC honors in each of her four years as a Seminole.
Freshman Whitney Wenglasz, who was competing in her first NCAA Tournament, displayed her strong future potential as she finished the event with a score of 74. She improved her score by 13 strokes over her score in the second round and finished with a three-day total of 235.
Sophomore Macarena Silva, who will be Florida State’s leader next season with the graduation of Westrup, enjoyed a nice tournament and finished in a tie for 57th place with a three-round score of 226. She carded a 73 in the second round and a 76 in the third round to close as the Seminoles’ second highest finisher.
The Seminoles finished as the highest placing team from the state of Florida as they finished ahead of Florida, UCF and Stetson.
The East Regional proved to be one of the toughest of the three regional championships in this year’s tournament. Among those teams not advancing were No. 7 ranked Auburn, No. 23 ranked Vanderbilt and No. 30 ranked Florida who was playing on its home course.
