WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Wednesday’s ACC opener marks the 67th meeting between the Florida State Seminoles (11-2) and the Miami Hurricanes (7-4). It is FSU’s second-most played opponent, behind the 84 meetings it has with Florida, but just ahead of the 62 matchups FSU has played against Clemson. Overall, FSU is 48-18 against the Hurricanes.
  • Brooke Wyckoff never had a chance to play against Miami during her All-America career as one of the top forwards in program history from 1997-01. But since she’s been on the bench as an assistant, associate and interim head coach, she has coached against Miami 27 times. FSU is 18-9 vs. Miami since Wyckoff first joined the FSU coaching staff in the 2011-12 season.
  • Freshman guard Ta’Niya Latson is trying to make more history in her incredible start with the Seminoles. Averaging 25.3 points per game this year, Latson is +5.3 points per game ahead of second-place Hailey Van Lith at Louisville (20.0 points per game). An ACC freshman has never won the league’s scoring title.
  • The Seminoles have won 12 of their last 16 ACC openers. When Wyckoff was the program’s interim head coach in 2020-21, she became the first FSU head coach to win their ACC coaching debut when FSU defeated Virginia, 69-51, on Dec. 13, 2020. Current graduate forward Valencia Myers tied a program record that game with nine blocked shots against the Cavaliers.
  • In the ACC’s Blue Ribbon Panel Predicted Order of Finish, Miami was selected sixth while Florida State was predicted ninth.
  • Despite coming off an 85-77 loss vs. No. 9 UConn, the Seminoles out-scored the Huskies 42-32 in the second half at Mohegan Sun Arena.
  • Florida State’s high-scoring offense is averaging an ACC-best 87.5 points per game. The program record in a single season since joining the conference in 1991-92 is 81.0 in 2017-18. FSU has only averaged above 80 points twice in program history (83.8 in 1990-91).
  • Florida State is 3-0 against schools from the state of Florida this season, defeating Bethune-Cookman (113-50), Florida (92-77) and Stetson (83-48) at home. FSU is 49-9 vs. schools from the Sunshine State over its last 58 games played.
  • The Seminoles are averaging 16.8 fast break points this season.
  • Although still early in the season, FSU holds the 31st-best NET ranking in the country. It owns one Top 40 win so far with its 76-75 victory over Purdue (38th) at the Cancun Challenge on Nov. 25.
  • Florida State and Miami offer up contrasting ways of forcing turnovers and wreaking havoc defensively: FSU leads the ACC averaging 7.1 blocks per game, while Miami leads the ACC with 11.0 steals.
  • The Seminoles begin conference play owning a 92-40 (.697) record vs. ACC opponents over the last eight seasons.
  • Latson is the nation’s only player who ranks in the Top 3 nationally in both free throws made (2nd) and field goals made (3rd), proving her versatility in getting into the scoring column.
  • In FSU’s six home games this season, the Seminoles are averaging 94.8 points per game. Sophomore Makayla Timpson averages 12.3 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and shoots 63.8 percent (30-of-47) from the floor at home.
  • Since 2015, Florida State has won seven of its last eight home games vs. Miami.
  • FSU owns eight consecutive winning seasons in ACC play. The Seminoles have also won 10 or more games in ACC play in each of the last seven seasons.
  • Latson won her sixth ACC Rookie of the Week honor in a row on Monday. The record for most ACC Rookies of the Week in a season is nine by Duke’s Elizabeth Marshall (2011-12) and Wake Forest’s Tracy Connor (1992-93).
