Spears, Warley Lead Seminoles to 67-61 Win Over Winthrop

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Primo Spears and Jalen Warley scored 12 points each to lead Florida State to a 67-61 victory over Winthrop at the Donald L. Tucker Center. Spears (7 of 9) and Warley (6 of 8) were a combined 13 of 17 from the free throw line as the Seminoles outscored the Eagles by a 30-20 margin from the free throw line to gain their second consecutive win.
Spears and Warley led four Seminoles in double-figure scoring. Jamir Watkins scored 11 and De'Ante Green scored 10 to lead Florida State to its 12th consecutive pre-holiday break victory. The Seminoles have won each of their games prior to the break since 2012 and raised their all-time record against current teams from the Big South Conference to 24-0. The Seminoles are now 3-0 all-time against Winthrop.
Spears finished as the Seminoles' leading scorer along with Warley as he scored in double figures for the third time in his three games as a Seminole. He also had two defensive rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
Warley played with energy in his 11th consecutive start this season, as he scored in double figures for the second consecutive game and third time this season. His most important basket came with 1:18 remaining as he made a driving lay-up to give the Seminoles a 60-55 advantage. He was also four of six from the free throw line in the second half.
Warley totaled two assists against zero turnovers in 21 minutes of playing time.
Green, in his sixth consecutive game as a starter, was a perfect six of six from the free throw line as he reached double-figure scoring for the career-high fifth time this season. He also contributed on the boards with five rebounds, to go along with one block and one steal.
Taylor Bol Bowen used his 15 minutes of playing time wisely as he earned his career-high of three blocked shots. He also tied his career-high with six rebounds – three offensive and three defensive.
Darin Green Jr. was feeling comfortable with two 3-pointers and eight total points. His most important basket came with 52 seconds remaining as he took a steal to the house, securing the victory for the Seminoles. His dunk gave the Seminoles an insurmountable seven point lead. He led the team with four steals as well.
"We were extremely active out there on the court," said Coach Leonard Hamilton. "We put them on the foul line a few times at the end of the second half, but that just shows how aggressive we were being from a defensive perspective."
Florida State was strong defensively tonight, earning a season-high of 10 blocks as a team compared to Winthrop's three. The Seminoles' total surpassed the team's previous season high for blocked shots with their nine against Kennesaw State in their season-opening game. The team ended with 14 steals and currently leads the ACC in steals per game.
The Seminoles forced 24 turnovers by the Eagles and held them to only 61 points. The Eagles entered the game averaging 77 points in their first 13 games of the season. Florida State also forced several shot clock violations due to its defensive pressure.
