TALLAHASSEE — During his 24-year tenure as head coach of Florida State's men's tennis team, Dwayne Hultquist's tutelage has helped many of his former players and assistant coaches obtain tennis positions at many Division-I Institutions.
Four of Hultquists' assistant coaches now have been hired as head coaches for tennis coaching positions at major collegiate universities.
Evan Urbina worked as the volunteer assistant coach for FSU men's tennis during the 2012-23 season. Urbina has worked as the Head coach for Air Force Academy's men's tennis program since the 2017-18 season and was an assistant coach from the 2014-17 seasons.
Nick Crowell, who spent 13 years at Florida State as an assistant and associate head coach for the Seminoles, was hired in 2016 to be Oklahoma's men's tennis head coach. Crowell is entering his seventh season as head coach for the Sooners.
John Roddick helped coach Florida State during the 1999-2000 season. Roddick was named UCF's Director of Tennis in 2016 and oversees both the men's and women's tennis programs, while also coaching the men's team.
Chris Doerr, who formerly was an associate coach for the previous four years at Florida State, was recently hired by his alma mater Memphis to the position of head coach.
Hultquist has mentored at least six assistants who now hold assistant coaching positions at Division-I programs. Among those assistant coaches are Jose Gracia (Oklahoma), Mack Kluer (Florida), Maciek Sykut (Duke), Robin Cambier (Marshall), and Tassilo Schmid (Pepperdine).
The most recent assistant coaching hire was Barnaby Smith, who played for the Seminoles last season, and was hired as an assistant men's tennis coach at Texas A&M.
