No. 23 Women’s Swim& Dive Picks Up Win Over Vanderbilt

TAthens, Ga.  –  The No. 16/23 Florida State swimming and diving teams returned to competition on Saturday at the Gabrielsen Natatorium against No.7/12 Georgia and Vanderbilt.
 
The 23rd-ranked Seminoles finished first in 13 events while facing the Commodores, picking up the win 230-61.  FSU fell to No. 12 Georgia, 180-117 and are now 5-3, 0-1 ACC on the season. The 16th-ranked men's team dropped its contest to the No. 7 Bulldogs 193-107, moving to 5-1, 1-0 ACC.
 
"We swam really well today," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "Winning the ladies medley relay was really special and we had some outstanding swims from our flyers. Tommaso (Baravelli) had a great day winning the breaststroke events and he had an amazing IM. We're really excited about where we are right now."
 
The women started the day by winning the 200 medley relay behind the team of Sarah Evans, Maddy Huggins, Jenny Halden and Gloria Muzito at 1:37.16.
 
Evans finished third in the 100 back at 53.89 and Muzito was third in the 50 free (22.80).
 
FSU dominated the 200 fly, led by Edith Jernstedt in first place (1:56.45). Sophie Freeman followed in second place at 1:58.06.  The Seminoles later swept the 100 fly, also led by Jernstedt in first (53.50), Halden in second (53.52) and Freeman in third (53.67).
 
Muzito came out of the break and placed second in the 100 free at 49.23 and Maysa Ratiu was fourth at 49.96, which was her fastest time. Ratiu was fifth in the 200 free, touching at 1:47.59, just off her best (1:47.41).
 
Freeman added her personal best in the 200 back, touching at 1:58.03 for third place.
 
Huggins secured three runner-up finishes, taking second in the 100 breast (1:00.08), 200 breast (2:11.89) and 400 IM (4:19.01).
 
Kayleigh Clark led the Noles on 3-meter, finishing in second place at 308.10, which was her personal best score. Samantha Vear followed in third place at 305.40 and Victoria Cervantes was fourth (292.20).
 
On 1-meter, Vear was the leader finishing third at 286.35 ahead of Izzy Gregersen (278.85) in fourth and Jessica Buntman (274.80) in fifth.
 
The men's team was led by Tommaso Baravelli, who turned in two wins in the breaststroke events. Baravelli won the 100 breast at 53.71 and 200 breast at 1:56.10, which was a win by over three seconds.  He also finished fourth in the 400 IM 3:53.93, which was his best.
 
Mason Herbet picked up a win in the 100 fly (47.69) and Peter Varjasi was the winner in the 100 free (42.42).
 
Yordan Yanchev placed second in the 500 free (4:19.74) and was third in the 200 free (1:34.90).
 
The Seminoles went one-two on 1-meter, led by Darwin Nolasco in first at 357.38. which was his best score. David Vargas followed in second at 348.38. Vargas was the winner on 3-meter, scoring 363.15, edging out Georgia top diver (360.68).
 
"I'm pretty proud of the divers," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "We set some goals, and achieved them. Now, it's on to UF!"
 
FSU will head to Ocala, Fla. to face No.2/3 Florida on Jan. 26 at 12 p.m.
