No. 23 Florida State Women's Basketball plays against ACC Blue Blood Duke for the 54th time in series history on Thursday night at 6 p.m. on the ACC Network. The Seminoles (14-6, 5-3) have won seven of the last nine meetings against the Blue Devils (12-6, 4-3) since 2015.
Thursday's matchup pits the ACC's second-highest scoring offense in Florida State (83.5 ppg) against one of the league's stingiest defenses in Duke (59.6 points allowed), which is one of six ACC teams allowing under 60 points per game.
The league's single-most influential shot blocker has been FSU junior forward Makayla Timpson, who leads the conference with 55 blocked shots and sits 18 blocks ahead of the next closest player. Collectively, Duke leads the conference with 6.8 blocks per game which ranks second in the country.
In last year's meeting between FSU and Duke, Timpson recorded 21 points and 10 rebounds in 29:24 in a 70-57 home win for FSU. She is eight rebounds shy of becoming the 19th Seminole with 600 career rebounds (592).
Sophomore Ta'Niya Latson earned another honor on Tuesday, being named an Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Top 10 Finalist. Latson was a finalist for the award last season. In ESPN's latest Top 25 women's college basketball player rankings on Dec. 21, Latson was rated 15th overall - before she began conference play with three consecutive 30-points games vs. Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and NC State.
Latson is averaging 24.8 points, shooting 44.7 percent, 90.2 percent from the free throw line, 4.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in FSU's five true road games this season.
Junior guard O'Mariah Gordon has enjoyed an outstanding junior year after an injury-riddled sophomore season. The Bradenton, Fla., native has a turnover percentage of just 10.2 percent - meaning the percentage of plays she's involved in where a turnover is committed. As an All-ACC Freshman, Gordon's turnover percentage was 23.4 percent, and was 17.5 percent as a sophomore.
Â
In 14 of FSU's 20 games played this season, the Seminoles have had four or more players reach double-figure points.
Latson remains one 30-point game shy of sole possession of first place in school history. Latson is currently tied with Seminole legend Sue Galkantas (1980-84) with 11 30-point performances in their FSU careers.
Averaging 76.4 possessions per game, the Seminoles actually lead the ACC in lowest turnovers per game at 11.0 - a mark that ranks fifth nationally. FSU turns the ball over just once every near 7 possessions (6.94).
The Noles are on a slight pace to set the program's 3-point field goals made record for the second straight year. Last year, FSU set the team record with 232. This season, FSU has made 157 3's, which is three ahead of its 154 made 3's through 20 games last season. FSU has not had the services of knock-down shooter Mariana Valenzuela this year due to injury.
