No. 16 Noles Down Harvard

Tallahassee, Fla. –  The 16th-ranked Florida State men's swimming and diving team (5-0, 1-0 ACC) defeated Harvard (3-1, 3-0 IVY) 168-132 at the Morcom Aquatics Center on Tuesday night.
 
"Today was about our seniors." FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "Harvard is a great team.  We had some bright spots today and I thought we competed hard."
 
UNF was unable to travel due to weather conditions earlier in the day, therefore the No. 23 FSU women's swimmers competed in an exhibition, while the divers dove against the Crimson.
 
The Seminoles started the day off by winning the 200 medley relay behind the team of Mason Herbet, Tommaso Baravelli, Tobias Schulrath and Jokubas Keblys at 1:28.58.
 
Yordan Yanchev posted two wins on the day, taking the 200 free with a time of 1:37.02, holding off Utku Kurtdere (1:37.60) in second place.  Yanchev later won the 500 free (4:27.04).
 
Harvard won the 100 back, but the Noles swept the 100 breast, led by Baravelli in first (55.35), followed by Jaydon Cunningham in second (55.43) and Marcos Egri-Martin in third (55.57).
 
The Crimson answered with a one-two showing in the 200 fly and added a win in the 50 free.
 
Off the break, Peter Varjasi was the winner in the 100 free at 43.21, but Harvard added another one-two punch to keep the meet tight. Baravelli held on to claim his second individual win of the night, touching first in the 200 breast at 2:00.33.
 
After Yanchev's 500 free win, Varjasi (48.26) and Sam Bork (48.45) helped the Noles pull away by placing first and second in the 100 fly.  Following the final break, Baravelli added his third win of the night, touching first in the 200 IM at 1:49.88.
 
Darwin Nolasco posted his career best score on 3-meter, winning at 405.15. David Vargas followed in second place at 378.98. On 1-meter, Nolasco was the runner-up with a score of 324.45.  Jesco Helling followed in fourth (286.43) and Vargas was seventh (278.78).
 
The Noles ended the meet by winning the 200 free relay behind Varjasi, Max Wilson, Keblys, and Bork (1:20.08).
 
In the women's meet against Harvard, Samantha Vear finished second on 3-meter with a score of 305.63. Victoria Cervantes competed in her first meet of the season, finishing fourth at 288.15, ahead of Vivian Johnson in fifth (282.60).  On 1-meter, Vear placed fourth (266.33), Jessica Buntman (264.83) was fifth and Kayleigh Clark (261.98) was sixth.
 
Gloria Muzito turned in the top time in the women's 200 free (1:53.65) and 50 free (23.47), while Hailey Heldenbrand was the winner in the 100 back (57.38).  Edith Jernstedt won the 100 breast (1:05.05) and Gabby Goodwin (2:06.75) took the 200 fly.

Sydney Cole was the winner in the 200 back (2:03.48) and Julia Mansson placed first in the 200 breast (2:22.00).
 
Maysa Ratiu (5:01.70) was the fastest in the 500 free and Jenny Bird placed first in the 100 fly (57.03). Reese Hinnerichs (2:10.61) won the 200 IM.
 
The Seminoles will head to Athens, Ga., to take on No. 7/12 Georgia and Vanderbilt on Jan. 13.
