TALLAHASSEE – The Florida State soccer team concluded its season after a penalty shootout defeat to Vanderbilt in the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
The Seminoles came out with intensity as they immediately forced a save out of the Vanderbilt keeper before Marianyela Jiménez fired a laser into the bottom left corner to record the opening goal inside the first minute. The Commodores answered with two goals.
Sophomore forward Jordynn Dudley took initiative as she stole the ball from a Vanderbilt midfielder and marched down the pitch, evading defenders and scoring an incredible solo effort goal to equalize the contest. Dudley recorded her ninth goal of the season and propelled FSU to an even score at the break.
FSU controlled all of the best chances throughout the second half, outshooting Vanderbilt 15-2, but was denied by the Vanderbilt keeper who recorded nine second-half saves. Vanderbilt was able to snatch the lead with 12 minutes of play remaining before a free kick chance allowed Kameron Simmonds to curl her redirected effort through defenders and into the back of the net to equalize with under 10 minutes to play.
The game faded into the overtime with two dangerous chances for both sides before moving to penalty kicks. The Seminoles scored on their first three efforts before the Vanderbilt keeper denied the final two shots to end the game.
The Florida State soccer team completed another historic season finishing 15-2-4. The Seminoles secured 15+ wins for the sixth consecutive season. FSU recorded 70 goals on the season, tied for the third most in program history and second consecutive season with 70+ goals.
Four Seminoles earned All-ACC honors while five Seminoles were named to the ACC All-Tournament Team, Taylor Huff being named the ACC Tournament MVP. The freshman class also recorded one of the highest point totals in program history.
The Seminoles claimed its 11th ACC Tournament Championship, the fifth consecutive conference title marks the longest stretch of conference dominance in program history and tied for the second longest in the competition.
