FSU’s Comeback Falls Short as Latson Scores 38 Points

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Florida State (8-2) hit the road to take on Tennessee (6-0) Wednesday night as part of the SEC/ACC Challenge. The Lady Volunteers snapped FSU's seven-game winning streak by a final score of 79-77.
A tale of two halves, the Noles fell just short of completing a 20-point second-half comeback bid on Tennessee.
Ta'Niya Latson led all scorers with 38 points, which was a career-high and just two shy of the program record set by Natasha Howard at 40.
Makayla Timpson added her fifth double-double of the season and 36th of her career, finishing the game with 11 points, and 13 rebounds. O'Mariah Gordon added 16 points.
In a match up featuring the nation's two highest-scoring offenses, the Noles got out to a slow start in the first quarter converting just 33 percent from the field with the addition of six turnovers. FSU trailed by six after one, as Latson led FSU with six points in the quarter.
Despite turning the Lady Vols over six times and cutting the lead to two, Tennessee shot over 50 percent from three while closing on a 13-2 run to end the first half. Latson continued to lead the Noles in scoring with 12 points, while Timpson led the Noles in rebounds with five.
Florida State got off to its best start of the game in the third quarter going on a 13-0 run to cut the 20-point deficit to just seven. The FSU defense held the Lady Vols to 2-13 shooting and after Latson's third steal of the night, the Noles were down five at the media timeout. After scoring just 27 points in the first half, the Seminoles found their groove, scoring 30 points in the quarter sparked by Latson with 16, Gordon with eight, and Timpson with six points to match her six boards and three blocks, tying the game at 57 entering the fourth quarter.
Tennessee took a five-point lead with less than two minutes to go in the fourth quarter. FSU fought back once again to tie the game at 77. In the final minute, the Lady Vols took a two-point lead with 17 seconds to go and held off FSU's tying shot attempt, winning the game 79-77.
The Seminoles will return home to open ACC conference play against SMU on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2:00 p.m. on ACCN.
