JACKSONVILLE?- Relief pitcher Carson Dorsey struck out 10 batters in 3.2 innings as Florida State (3-0) scored three runs in the ninth inning to beat Jacksonville (2-1) 7-4 Tuesday night at John Sessions Stadium.
Dorsey, a junior college transfer from Gulf Coast State College, entered after 5.1 innings from starter Conner Whittaker. After tying the game against Dorsey in the sixth inning, Jacksonville struck out nine times over the final three innings.
Cam Smith had three hits against the Dolphins, including a double in the ninth inning. James Tibbs walked and Jaime Ferrer had the game-winning RBI single. FSU also scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly in the final frame.
Florida State opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning on a Daniel Cantu single. Sophomores DeAmez Ross and Smith singled before Tibbs walked, loading the bases for Cantu's one-out single. FSU has scored in the opening frame in all three games to begin the season.
Whittaker did not allow a base runner over the first three innings before the Dolphins got on the board in the fourth. Jacksonville singled, stole second and moved to third on an error before a sacrifice fly scored leadoff hitter Will Gale.
FSU answered with a pair of runs in the fifth, again from the top of the order. Ross drew a walk and stole second base; Smith singled to put runners on the corners and Tibbs singled to plate Ross. Smith made the score 4-1 Florida State on Ferrer's sacrifice fly.
The Dolphins started the fifth inning with a single and walk before Whittaker retired the next three batters to maintain FSU's margin. Jacksonville did tie the game with three runs in the sixth inning, but shortstop Alex Lodise retired the go-ahead run at the plate to end the inning with the score tied at 4-4.
Jacksonville's only two runners against Dorsey in the final three innings came on a pair of walks. Dorsey's final line was 3.2 innings, 1 earned run on 2 hits and 10 strikeouts.
