Seminoles Buckle Down for Big Win Over Miami

2/4/2024 2:53:00 PM | Women's Basketball

TALLAHASSEE – A 14-2 game-ending run that was ignited by several strong defensive possessions elevated Florida State Women's Basketball to a 75-68 rivalry win over Miami on Sunday morning at an enthusiastic Tucker Center.

"Games against Miami are always exciting," FSU Head Coach Brooke Wyckoff said. "It's nice to play them at home in front of an awesome crowd and come out with a win. I'm proud of how as a team (in the fourth quarter) we locked down and focused on both ends and got stops."
The Seminoles nabbed their fourth NET Top 50 win of the season by holding Miami to just two points over the last 5 ½ minutes of the game. Momentum twisted in FSU's favor when junior guard O'Mariah Gordon hit a crucial 3-pointer in stride to tie the game at 66-66 with 4:56 remaining.

After getting one of many stops down the stretch on the next possession, sophomore Ta'Niya Latson barreled inside for a tough layup as the Seminoles retook the lead at 68-66 with 4:26 remaining. One of the biggest shots of the game came on a 3-point field goal by fifth-year guard Sara Bejedi, who hit one from the corner to make it a two-possession game at 73-68 with 1:18 left.

Bejedi became the 17th Seminole to make 100 career 3-point field goals on her first attempt of the game early in the first quarter. Her final made 3 was one of the biggest shots of her career.

Florida State out-scored Miami 19-11 in the fourth quarter despite trailing 66-61 with 5:42 left. Junior forward Makayla Timpson secured her 10th double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds – also her seventh career 20-point game and her second vs. the Hurricanes (14-7, 4-6).

Gordon added 16 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots – including an enormous block late in the first quarter than sent the crowd into a frenzy.

"I'm proud of 'O' and how she led us today with 36 minutes on the floor," Wyckoff added.

Gordon also hit a big 3-pointer to end the third quarter and keep the Seminoles right in the game trailing 57-56.

"It felt good, like it was a momentum changer," Gordon said on her 3-point field goal to end the third quarter. "Especially after how the third quarter went. It showed once we went into the fourth quarter, like Coach Brooke said, the last five we held them to two points and had that edge, we went out and played hard to finish the game. We knew how crucial it was to finish games."

The Seminoles had four players in double figures with Timpson (22), Gordon (16), Latson (15) and Bejedi (11). FSU out-rebounded Miami 37-33 and went 10-of-26 from beyond the arc, including 3-of-6 in the fourth quarter. FSU was able to combat relentless pressure from the Hurricanes, which out-scored FSU 24-15 in the third.

Miami was led by Lemyah Hylton's 15 points and Jaida Patrick's 12 rebounds. Since 2020, FSU is 5-4 against Miami in what has been a back-and-forth rivalry as of late.

Florida State gets back on the road with a mid-week matchup at Pittsburgh on Thursday at 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. The Seminoles then host No. 14 Notre Dame on Sunday at Noon in FSU's Paint it Pink game.
