No. 18 Softball Run Rules NC State to Claim Series

3/29/2024 8:30:00 PM | Softball

TALLAHASSEE - A complete game from the offense, defense and pitching led the No. 18 Florida State softball team (23-9, 6-2) to an 8-0 win in five innings over NC State (18-15, 1-10) in front of 1,089 fans at the Seminole Softball Complex on Friday evening.

FSU was in control from start to finish as Mimi Gooden stranded two runners on first and second to put a zero on the board for the Noles in the first inning. After a Jaysoni Beachum single, Kalei Harding stepped in and hit her seventh home run of the season and her 38th and 39th RBI of the season to give the Noles a 2-0 lead after one.

Walks by Isa Torres and Kaley Mudge and an infield single from Kennedy Harp loaded the bases for the red hot Beachum who delivered again with two more RBI to give FSU a commanding 4-0 lead after two innings. The Noles added one more run in the third on a sacrifice fly from Isa Torres to extend their lead to 5-0.

Gooden was terrific for the Noles as she retired eight consecutive batters spanning from the first inning to the third inning. The Wolfpack threatened in the top of the fourth with a single and double to put two runners in scoring position, but Emma Wilson came in and recorded two straight pop ups to get the Noles out of the inning.

The Wolfpack threatened in a strange top half of the fifth inning that took over 20 minutes with multiple delays and reviews. The Wolfpack loaded the bases with no outs, but Makenna Reid rose to the moment with a strikeout and two pop ups to keep the Wolfpack scoreless.

FSU took that momentum into the bottom of the fifth inning as Jahni Kerr and Torres hit back-to-back singles, and Harp hit her third home run of the season to end the game in five innings.

Beachum, Kerr and Harp each recorded two hits to lead the Seminoles while Harding, Torres and Michaela Edenfield each added a hit of their own.

Gooden was credited with the win to improve to 2-0 this season. She allowed just three hits in 3.1 innings while throwing just 34 pitches.

FSU will look for the series sweep tomorrow at noon on ACCNX.
