Bats Stay Hot in 19-3 Win vs. FGCU

TALLAHASSEE – Florida State defeated Florida Gulf Coast, 19-3 in a midweek showdown, advancing their record to 11-0 and their home record to 7-0.
 
Cam Smith continued his torrid streak to begin the year, finishing 3-for-4 with his third home run. For the season, Smith is hitting .500 (25-for-50).
 
Jaime Ferrer added his first career grand slam, Alex Lodise hit his second home run in as a many games and Marco Dinges added four RBI and his first home run as a Seminole.
 
Conner Whittaker (2-0) shook off home runs to the first two FGCU batters to retire 15 consecutive heading to the sixth inning. The right-hander allowed three runs on three hits and tied a career-high with nine strikeouts.
 
Florida State set a season high with 18 hits. Smith and Lodise had three a piece, 11 players had at least one hit and 14 players reached base.
 
The Noles four home runs were a season high.
 
Behind Whittaker, Hudson Rowan and Yoel Tejeda combined for 3.0 shutout innings. Rowan struck out the side in the seventh inning, while Tejeda recorded his first two strikeouts as a Seminole.

OF NOTE:
  • Florida State's four home runs and 18 hits were season highs. The 19 runs were one shy of the season high.
  • Jaime Ferrer hit his third home run of the season and his first career grand slam. Ferrer's five RBI were a career high.
  • Ferrer's grand slam was FSU's third of the season. FSU hit just one grand slam in 54 games in 2023.
  • Marco Dinges was 2-for-4 with an RBI single, solo home run and two sacrifice flies. His four RBI were a season high (entered Wednesday with three on the season). Dinges began the day 11th in the nation with three sacrifice flies. He has a five-game hitting streak.
  • After allowing back-to-back homers to begin the game, Conner Whittaker retired 15 consecutive batters. He improved to 2-1 on the season and tied his career high with nine strikeouts.
  • DeAmez Ross singled in his first at-bat to extend his on-base streak to 22 games, a career high and the longest active streak on the team. Ross tied a career high with three runs.
  • Cam Smith followed with a single to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. That is tied with Ross for the 6th-longest by a Seminole over the last 10 seasons.
  • Smith was 3-for-4 with his 3rd home run of the season. Smith is hitting .500 (25-for-50).
  • Florida State trailed after the first two innings. FSU had trailed by just one complete inning through the first 10 games.
  • Alex Lodise hit his second home run in as many games and had a season-high three hits. FSU has had a player with at least three hits in all 11 games to begin the season.
  • FSU has scored at least seven runs in all 11 games this season, and at least 10 runs seven times.
  • James Tibbs III drew a season-high three walks; he has reached safely in all 11 games this season.
  • Freshman Andrew Duncan recorded his first career hit.
  • FSU was 3-for-3 on stolen bases and is now 24-for-25 on the season.
  • Florida State is one of five remaining undefeated Division I teams. FSU has started 11-0 for the 12th time in program history.
