TALLAHASSEE – Darin Green Jr. scored 26 points to lead Florida State to an 83-75 victory over Miami at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The win marked the Seminoles' third straight and 12th in its last 13 games against Miami. The win moved Seminole Head Coach Leonard Hamilton into a tie for fourth in ACC history with Maryland's Gary Williams with his 192nd career ACC regular season victory.
Green Jr. tied his career-high with eight 3-point field goals made for a season-high 26 points. He previously made eight 3-point field goals against St. John's on December 17, 2022. Green Jr. came within four points of tying his career-high of 30 points in the Orange Bowl Classic game against the Red Storm. Green's eight 3-point field goals made marked the sixth time in school history that a player had made at least eight triples in a single game. The Seminole record for 3-point field goals made is 10 by George McCloud at La Salle on February 23, 1989.
Following a pregame ceremony honoring seven seniors who've played integral roles in the success of the Seminoles program for Senior Day, Florida State struck first with a Jamir Watkins steal turned into a dunk within the first minute of play.
"I love this camaraderie at the end of the day," said Seminole Head Coach Leonard Hamilton. "We're trying to get all our seniors on the floor and the end of the game, the locker room was festive, and they are in a good frame of mind I think going into the ACC tournament."
Both teams battled in the first half as the game saw three lead changes and eight ties. The Seminoles took the lead at 28-27 with 3:15 left in the first half, thanks to a layup from Taylor Bol Bowen and followed shortly thereafter by a layup from Jalen Warley.
Florida State would maintain a 37-32 lead heading into halftime, closing out the first with an alley-oop dunk from Primo Spears to Cam Corhen on the receiving end of a sensational pass.
The Seminoles' first-half offense was led by Darin Green Jr. as he scored 12 points, going 4-of-11 from 3-point range and securing one rebound and two assists.
"Darin is our most experienced player," said Hamilton. "Obviously, he works as hard as he does and there's a certain level of confidence that comes over you when you feel confident in certain positions on the floor. It meant a lot more to him today because it's the last time you're going to play in the Tuck, and it meant an awful lot to him."
Defensively, Florida State won the first half rebound battle, securing 23 total, and holding the visiting Hurricanes to four offensive rebounds and 18 total. The Seminoles also had three blocks and six total steals to finish out the first half.
"From the defensive standpoint, we did okay on the first shot, but their (Florida State) offensive rebounds just absolutely killed us," said Miami Head Coach Jim Larrañaga. "They ended up with 15 offensive rebounds, which led to 16 points. When you play good defense but keep giving them second shots, it becomes very difficult."
The second half was very much the same back and forth battle that the first was.
But, just like the first half, the Seminoles found a way to stay ahead of Miami. Florida State held the lead for 21:59 over the course of the game.
Green continued to lead the Seminole offense in the second half. He added four additional 3-pointers after the intermission, bringing his total to eight and matching his career high.
Green Jr. (24), Jamir Watkins (16), Jalen Warley (13), and Cameron Corhen (10) all scored in double-digits in the Seminoles victory. With this game, Corhen has now scored in double-figures in four consecutive and six time in the last seven games that he has scored in double-figures.
Watkins finished the game with his sixth career double-double of (16 points and 11 rebounds), while leading the team with five assists. It marked the career-best 17th consecutive game Watkins has scored in double -figures.
The Seminoles' next game will take place in the ACC Tournament at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. on March 10 at 12 Noon against Virginia Tech. The Seminoles' are the No. 9 seed and the Hokies the No. 8 seed in the tournament.
