Mercer Hands Noles First Non-Conference Loss

TALLAHASSEE – No. 8 Florida State fell to visiting Mercer 13-6 Tuesday night at Dick Howser Stadium. The loss was FSU's first in a midweek contest and first outside of ACC play this year.
 
The Seminoles – 30-6 overall – led 2-1 after the third inning, but the Bears answered with seven runs in the top of the fourth to pull away. Noah Best's grand slam capped the scoring in the Mercer fourth.
 
Daniel Cantu hit a home run for Florida State, his fourth of the season and FSU's 68th on the year. The Noles have a home run in 32 of 36 games, including 11 consecutive.
 
FSU used nine pitchers in the contest, a season high.

OF NOTE:
  • Leadoff hitter Max Williams had a career-high four hits, finishing 4-for-5 for his 10th multi-hit game of the year. Williams extended his hitting streak to seven games and on-base streak to nine games, both career bests.
  • Connor Hults entered in relief and struck out a career-high five batters. His first two strikeouts came with the bases loaded in the second inning to get FSU out of trouble; he struck out the first four batters he faced.
  • Drew Faurot singled and stole a base. He has a four-game hitting streak and is 7-for-7 on the basepaths.
  • Daniel Cantu hit his fourth home run of the season and 29th of his career. Florida State has at least one home run in 32 of 36 games this year, including 11 consecutive.
  • Cam Smith drew a walk in the fifth inning; he has reached safely in 46 consecutive games, tied with Jack Rye (2005-06) for the 14th-longest on-base streak in FSU history. Smith added a two-run triple in the seventh inning, his first of the year and sixth of his career.
  • Smith was 2-for-4 and leads FSU with 22 multi-hit games on the season.
  • Marco Dinges was hit by a pitch to extend his on-base streak to nine games; it was his first HBP of the year.
  • James Tibbs threw out his fourth runner this year; he has four of FSU's six outfield assists on the season.
  • FSU used a season-high nine pitchers. The Noles had previously used seven pitchers
