Four-Run First Enough as Noles Beat No. 6 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – Powered by Jaime Ferrer's three-run home run, No. 10 Florida State scored four runs in the first inning to beat No. 6 Duke, 4-2, Friday evening at Jack Coombs Field. Starting pitcher Jamie Arnold improved to 8-1 with another nine-strikeout performance, while Brennen Oxford and Connor Hults combined for four scoreless innings to preserve the lead.
Ferrer's home run came in his first at-bat after he missed his first career game Tuesday night. Ferrer has 13 home runs on the season, a career-high.
The Blue Devils scored runs in the first and third innings, but Arnold, Oxford and Hults kept Duke off the board over the final six frames. Arnold threw 103 pitches over 5.0 innings, with nine strikeouts and five hits allowed. Oxford pitched 3.1 innings with five strikeouts, while Hults earned his third save of the season. Hults entered with runners on the corners and one out in the ninth, forcing a lineout and strikeout to end the game.
Cam Smith singled and scored on Marco Dinges' single in the first inning, pushing his on-base streak to 51 games. He also laid out for the second out in the ninth inning, snagging a ball that likely would have tied the game down the left-field line for Duke.

- Jaime Ferrer hit a three-run home run in the first inning, his career-best 13th of the season. Ferrer is second on the team in home runs and leads FSU with eight home runs in ACC games.
- Florida State has hit a home run in 16 consecutive games, tied for the second-longest streak in school history and two behind the school record of 18 in 1983. The Noles have a home run in 37 of 41 games this year.
- Marco Dinges plated Smith with a single in the first inning, pushing his on-base streak to 14 games, a career best.
- Ferrer and Dinges lead FSU with active five-game hitting streaks.
- Connor Hults earned his third save of the season, tying Brennen Oxford and Carson Dorsey for the team lead.
- Daniel Cantu was hit by a pitch for the sixth time this year and 44th time in his career. Cantu began the weekend 23rd among active players in career HBP.
- Alex Lodise dropped down his sixth sacrifice bunt of the year. He has six of FSU's 14 on the season.
- Smith's diving catch in the ninth inning ended Ben Miller's hitting streak at 18 games. He was 0-for-5 Friday after entering second in the country with a .444 batting average.
