TALLAHASSEE - The No. 1 Florida State soccer team begins its national championship title defense on Thursday night at South Florida.
The Seminoles will start the season on the road for a third straight season, kicking off at 7 p.m. and streaming on ESPN+. FSU holds a 10-game winning streak over South Florida dating back to 1998 which includes three NCAA Tournament victories. This also marks Florida State's first road game against the Bulls since 2003.
Head coach Brian Pensky begins his third season at the helm of the program after becoming the first head coach to win two straight ACC championships in his first two seasons. In 2023, he was named ACC Coach of the Year and earned the United Soccer Coaches Staff of the Year accolade. This year marks 20 seasons of head coaching for Pensky after his time at Maryland and Tennessee before claiming his first-ever national championship with FSU.
The Seminoles hold a 34-game scoring streak dating back to 2022, tied for the longest in program history, and are on the program's longest winning streak at 15 games. FSU also holds a 23-game unbeaten streak, one shy of the school record, is unbeaten in its last 15 season openers, and holds a nin- game unbeaten streak on the road.
Florida State completed its first-ever undefeated season en route to the program's fourth national championship in 2023 with a 22-0-1 record. The Seminoles finished their last six games with a plus-18 goal differential, scoring 19 goals and conceding just one goal. Onyi Echegini earned the program's third MAC Hermann Trophy in the past four seasons, awarded to the best collegiate soccer player of the season.
The Seminoles return 10 players from last year's side including United Soccer Coaches National Freshman of the Year Jordynn Dudley and All-ACC second team honoree Taylor Huff. FSU capitalized on the recruiting trail, raking in the No. 1 2024 recruiting class according to TopDrawerSoccer, bringing seven incoming transfers and seven freshmen into the fold.
