No. 1 FSU Scores 10 Goals In Home Opener; Huff Records Three Goal Hat Trick

8/18/2024 10:26:00 PM | Women's Soccer

TALLAHASSEE - The No. 1 Florida State soccer team (2-0-0) achieved a record-breaking night, defeating North Florida (1-1-0) 10-0 in the season's home opener on Thursday night. FSU eclipsed its longest-ever unbeaten streak at 25 games and scored double-digit goals for the first time since 2007.

Taylor Huff became the 18th player in program history to record a hat trick and scored seven points for the Seminoles, one shy of the most points ever scored in a game for FSU and the first player to record a hat trick since Lauren Flynn's incredible senior night over NC State last season. This marks three straight seasons with a Seminole scoring three or more goals.

The Seminoles wasted no time taking the lead as Ashlyn Puerta took a rebound off the keeper and fired the shot into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. The 17 year old recorded her first goal only three minutes into her first start. Fellow freshman Wrianna Hudson drove through the box and laid off an easy shot for Huff for the second score.

Camille Ashe scored off a clever set piece before Huff scored her second off a masterful olimpico goal, looping her attempt from the corner spot over the bodies in the box and soaring into the upper left corner . Freshman Brazilian midfielder Lara Dantas registered her first goal off a well-placed through ball from Peyton McGovern and the Seminoles led by a handful at the break.

Florida State kept the onslaught rolling with goals from Mimi Van Zanten and Ashe before Solai Washington scored her first career goal. Huff made the defense pay as she was given time and space to unleash a wonderful goal into the roof of the net and recorded the elusive third goal for a hat trick. Olivia Lebdaoui punctuated the victory with a tenth goal on the night and scored her first goal since 2022 after injuries kept her sidelined for all of 2023.

FSU recorded 10 or more goals in a game for the fourth time in program history and scored 15 goals in the first two games of a season for only the second time, the first since 2009 with 7-0 and 8-0 scorelines over Jacksonville and South Alabama respectively.

Florida State will continue its four-game homestand with a Thursday evening battle with Rice. First kick is set for 7 p.m. and available to watch on ACC Network.
