TALLAHASSEE – Florida State has hired All-American player Megan Carney as an assistant coach for the Seminoles, head coach Sara Tisdale announced Monday. Carney joins Tisdale and associate head coach MacKenzie Plaskey on FSU's inaugural staff as the Seminoles continue to build for their debut season in the spring of 2026.
"Meg has competed at the highest levels and on the biggest stages," Tisdale said. "Her experience as an ACC student-athlete and a member of Team USA will provide valuable insight and leadership for our student-athletes. Meg will guide all aspects of our offense, and she will play a pivotal role in shaping our future recruitment efforts. Florida State is renowned for its rich tradition of excellence, particularly in women's athletics. From day one, our ambition has been for Seminole lacrosse to become part of FSU's storied athletic legacy. With Meg's experience and deep knowledge of the game, we are one step closer to making that vision a reality."
Carney authored a remarkable playing career at Syracuse, earning All-America honors four times and serving as a team captain her final two seasons. She ranks in the top 10 in program history with 192 career goals scored and 271 career points. She also won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2019 U-19 World Championship.
"I'm incredibly excited to be coaching Division I women's lacrosse in the ACC at Florida State University," Carney said. "Being part of such a prestigious institution with a rich history of athletic and academic excellence is an honor. I'm thrilled to work alongside Sara and Mac, whose passion and vision for this team are truly inspiring. I can't wait to help build something special here at FSU and contribute to the legacy of this great university."
Carney scored a team-high 59 goals and earned second-team All-ACC honors in 2023, when she helped lead the Orange to a share of the ACC regular season championship and an 18-3 final record after advancing to the semifinal round of the NCAA Tournament. That year, she ranked third in the ACC in shooting percentage, sixth in the conference in goals per game and eighth in the ACC in shots on goal per game.
As a junior, Carney registered eight hat tricks while scoring 31 goals and accounting for 48 points. In 2021, she scored 49 goals, including a career-high seven in a win at Louisville, and 69 points as the Orange advanced to the national championship game after playing in the ACC Tournament championship game. In recognition of her performance, she was a first-team All-ACC selection, earned second-team All-America honors from the IWLCA and was nominated for the Tewaaraton Award presented to the nation's most outstanding college lacrosse player.
She started all eight games in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, scoring 21 goals and 32 points. As a true freshman, Carney scored 32 goals and recorded 24 assists for 56 total points, including five points in each of Syracuse's two NCAA Tournament games.
Carney was named to the All-ACC Academic Team three times and was a member of the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll. She earned her bachelor's degree in sport management from Syracuse in 2022 and completed her certificate in intercollegiate athletic advising and support from Syracuse in 2023.
