TALLAHASSEE – When you hear first-year Florida State head coach Luke Loucks implore his team to rebound, he means his entire team.  From the forwards to the guards, he wants all five of his players on the court to crash the glass.

Loucks' game plan in certainly working as his trio of starting guards (seniors Kobe MaGee, Robert McCray V, and Lajae Jones) are averaging a combined 15.3 of the Seminoles' 40.3 rebounds per game. In Florida State's victory over Alabama State, the Seminoles starting backcourt totaled 18 rebounds, with each player earning six rebounds.  Against Florida, the threesome totaled nearly half of the Seminoles' total for the game (15 of 36 in the narrow two-point loss).

Because of the numbers the Seminoles' offense is generating, Florida State's defense has been overlooked heading into Tuesday night's home game at the Donald L. Tucker Center against UT Martin. The Seminoles' game against the Skyhawks will be streamed on ACCNX with Shawn Davison and Jacob Ridenhour and can be heard on the Seminole Sports Network with Jeff Culhane and Blake Miles.

Tickets are available for Tuesday's game at Seminoles.com. Tickets for Florida State students are free; they can be claimed here.

In a special halftime ceremony, former Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton will be honored with a banner in the rafters of the Tucker Center signifying him as the winningest coach in school history with 638 victories during his coaching career in Tallahassee (2003-25).

"Rebounding is one of the staples of our team," said MaGee, who celebrated his 22nd birthday this past Saturday. "Rebounding is at the core of how we play; our defense is what starts our offense.  We are at our best when we go to the glass and start our offensive break on the defensive end of the court.

The philosophy has worked during the first three games of Loucks' career at Florida State.

Florida State outrebounded Alcorn State in its season-opening win and scored a 108-76 win over the Braves. The Seminoles totaled an advantage on the offensive glass and won the second chance points battle by a 19-9 scoring margin. Florida State outrebound Alcorn State and won the fastbreak point margin in gaining the win.

The Seminoles won the rebounding battle by a season-high +14 margin in their 101-64 win over Alabama State. Inside the statistics, Florida State won both the second chance points (32-14) and fastbreak points (16-8) margins in scoring over 100 points for the second consecutive game.

"We want to get after teams defensively," said Loucks following the Seminoles' victory over Alabama State. "We did a good job on defense which helped us creating good looks on offense. Our defense can fuel our offense. Once we get out and run, it's going to be really hard to stop us."

Against Florida, MaGee enjoyed a stellar night with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. It marked the second time in three games the senior transfer from Drexel scored in double figures as a Seminole, and the first time he had pulled down more than six rebounds in the garnet and gold.

"I consider myself to be a rebounding guard and a guard who has a strong ability and a strong desire to rebound," said MaGee. "I think there is a distinction between the two. I feel that I can use my height and athletic ability to rebound while at the same time being a smart basketball player who understands how to play the ball as it comes off of the rim."

MaGee has been a strong rebounding guard throughout his career.  He ranked second among his Drexel teammates with a career-high 5.6 rebounds per game average during the 2024-25 season. His nine rebounds against Florida a week ago was the fifth time in the last two seasons he had pulled down nine or more rebounds in a game.

MaGee totaled a career-high 12 rebounds against Towson University and totaled 10 against UNC Wilmington in a three-game stretch when he averaged 7.7 rebounds.

As one of the more experienced Florida State players with 91 career games played, MaGee has accepted many roles for the Seminoles in his first season in Tallahassee.

Among those roles is his accepted position as one of the Seminoles' team leaders.

"Being a team leader is a role that can be filled by so many members of our team," said MaGee.  "Earning that role means that I can be trusted to be a leader by our coaching staff and my teammates. We all have the ability to lead and that what's makes our team so cohesive."

While rebounding is a statistic that currently stands out for MaGee, he is Florida State's leader in 3-point field goals made with nine, is perfect from the free throw line through three games (six of six), and has five steals,  and four assists.  He's also second in minutes played at 27.1 minutes played per game.

"I feel like am a good scorer and a good rebounder and I'm willing to do anything both offensively and defensively to help us win games," said MaGee.

The social science major who is set to graduate from Florida State in August, has certainly Impressed Loucks in his relatively short time on campus.

"What we first saw in Kobe was his incredible desire to be successful in all facets of his life," said Loucks. "His progress as a player, and his success academically, made it evident to our staff that he was the kind of individual we wanted in our program from day one. Kobe is one of our leaders on the court, in the locker room, and in the classroom."
