Noles Come Up Just Short at No. 14 Miami

CORAL GABLES - The Florida State volleyball team (13-9, 7-6) gave No. 14 Miami (20-4, 10-3) all it could handle on Wednesday night, but the Noles ultimately fell short in a five-set thriller (25-22, 23-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-10) in Coral Gables.
The Noles got off to a great start in set one as they jumped out to an 8-5 lead behind the arm of Kyleene Filimaua. The teams traded points and the Noles held the lead until the Canes got their first lead at 18-17. The teams traded points, but the Noles got back-to-back kills from Iane Henke and a kill from Payton Whalen to go up 23-20. Filimaua put down her seventh kill of the set to give the Noles the first set.
The Canes were the ones to get out to a quick start in set two as they took a 15-10 lead, but the Noles stormed back to take a 20-19 lead thanks to a kill from Nenu Kpea. Miami responded to take a 24-21 lead, but a service error and a kill from Henke pulled the Noles within one. FSU was unable to rally as Miami tied the match.
Set three was a back-and-forth affair for the first half before each team traded runs. Miami went on a 4-1 run to take a 12-11 lead. The Noles used a 4-0 run of their own to go up 20-17, but Miami ended the set on a 8-1 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Neither team was able to get any separation in set four as the set saw 20 total ties between the two teams. After Miami took a 23-22 lead, the Noles got a huge block from Johanna Sova and Kpea and a couple of Miami hitting errors to take the set 25-23 and send the match to a fifth set.
FSU got off to a good start in set five taking a 6-4 lead. The match turned on its head as the Noles looked to go up 7-4 on a Hurricanes' hitting error in the fifth, but after a lengthy review, the call was overturned to give the Noles a 6-5 lead. Miami went on a quick 3-0 run to take the lead. The Noles were able to stop the momentum for a moment as the teams traded points, but Miami ended the match on 6-1 run to take the match.
The Noles' dynamic duo of Filimaua and Henke were terrific once again as each tallied 20 kills on the night. Defensively, the Noles tallied 13 blocks which was tied for the most FSU has had in any ACC match this season. Kpea and Delaney Ewing led the way with six blocks each.
The Noles and Hurricanes will meet again on Saturday at Tully Gym. First serve is set for 1 p.m. on ACCNX.
