TALLAHASSEEÂ -Â The Florida State women's tennis team (6-1) defeated USF (1-7) 4-0 on Friday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts in Tampa.
FSU began the afternoon strong on the doubles courts, obtaining multiple-game leads on all three. Laura Putz and Millie Bissett earned the first Seminole victory of the day, defeating Dharani Niroshan and Melisa Senli 6-1 on Court 2. Maria Juliana Parra Romero and Eva Shaw followed suit on Court 1 defeating Sienna Leeson and Charlotte Ruud 6-2 to clinch the doubles point for the Noles. Â
In singles, No. 119 Mary Boyce Deatherage began the day down 1-4 in the opening set. Deatherage rattled off 11 straight games to earn a 6-4, 6-0 straight-sets victory and capture FSU's first singles point on Court 3. Parra Romero earned a straight-sets victory on Court 4 defeating Kelly Vargas 6-2, 7-5. Tina Li clinched the match for the Noles by defeating Karine Kulidjian 7-5, 6-3.Â
Deatherage improved to 6-0 this spring and 11-1 overall this season to begin her freshman campaign. Florida State has continued to impress in doubles, with two pairs currently undefeated this spring. Bissett and Putz improved to 5-0 on Court 2, while Parra Romero and Shaw improved to 6-0 from Court 1.
Florida State returns home on Sunday, for a doubleheader against Air Force and Florida A&M beginning at noon. Admission is free to all home tennis matches. Â
