FSU Secures Series with Saturday Win

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Four home runs helped propel the No. 9-ranked Florida State baseball team to a 9-2 victory over James Madison on Saturday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium.

In front of a sellout crowd of 6,700 fans, the second consecutive full house to begin the year, junior second baseman Drew Faurot hit his second home run in as many days and had two hits with a team-best three RBI. Junior right fielder Gage Harrelson led off the game with his first homer as a Seminole as FSU never trailed in the game.

Junior center fielder Max Williams also hit a two-run shot in the third and junior shortstop Alex Lodise went yard in the sixth as part of a three-hit day.

Redshirt junior left-hander Joey Volini made his first career appearance and start at Florida State and held JMU to two hits and one unearned run in 4.2 innings. He struck out seven and walked one while earning the win. Three relievers followed him and combined to allow one run on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 3.1 innings.

The Seminoles (2-0) scored nine runs on 10 hits with one error to remain unbeaten on the young season. They held the Dukes (0-2) to two runs on five hits with three errors. FSU secured the series victory and improved to 8-0 all-time against JMU, with the final contest of the three-game set for Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.

Harrelson got the game going with a long home run to right-center to lead off Florida State's bottom half of the first inning. It was his third career homer and first in an FSU uniform.

Williams extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-run blast deep over the right-field wall to score Lodise, who singled. Williams' homer was his first in 2025 and 15th of his career, all at Florida State.

Meanwhile, Volini allowed a walk in the first and a single in the second. He then tossed 1-2-3 innings in the third and fourth, with a pair of strikeouts in both.

The Seminoles added to their advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs to make it 6-0. Junior first baseman Carter McCulley led off the inning with a double, his first hit at FSU, and Faurot followed with his second home run of the weekend. The ball that just cleared the left-field fence was his 24th career homer and ninth at Florida State. The inning was capped off by an RBI groundout from Harrelson to plate Carns, who doubled for his first collegiate base hit.

James Madison got on the board in the fifth with a two-out double that was followed by a fielding error on a grounder to score the run. Junior righty Maison Martinez entered, making his Seminole debut, and quickly got out of the inning thanks to a caught-stealing from Carns to Lodise.

FSU got the run back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-1, as Faurot doubled to left. That plated junior designated hitter Jaxson West, who reached on a fielder's choice. Martinez then struck out two in a scoreless sixth.

Lodise sent a long home run into the parking lot in left field in the sixth to make it 9-1. The two-run blast scored Harrelson, who led off the inning with a walk.

Sophomore righty Peyton Prescott joined the list of players making their first appearance in the Garnet and Gold and pitched a clean seventh and eighth. He loaded the bases in the ninth before sophomore right-hander Chris Knier also made his FSU debut and got a double play to end it after allowing one run to score for the 9-2 final.
