No. 9 FSU Sweeps Penn

2/23/2025 5:53:00 PM | Baseball

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 9 Florida State baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Penn with a 5-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium.

On a cool and cloudy afternoon, with some light mid-game rain, the Seminoles (7-0) remained unbeaten to begin the season and swept their second series in as many weekends. FSU scored its five runs on nine hits with no errors, while the Quakers (0-3) were held to three runs on five hits with two errors in the final game of their season-opening series.

Florida State has won at least seven in a row to start a season in back-to-back years, the first time it has achieved that feat since the 2018 and 2019 teams began with 14- and 12-game win streaks, respectively.

Junior shortstop Alex Lodise homered in the fourth inning and scored two runs, while junior right fielder Gage Harrelson and junior center fielder Max Williams each had two hits and joined Lodise with an RBI. Harrelson also scored two runs.

On the mound, sophomore left-hander Wes Mendes improved to 2-0 on the year. In 5.0 innings, he held Penn to one run on three hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. He pitched 5.0 innings and fanned eight batters for the second consecutive start to begin the year after coming into 2025 with single-game highs of 3.0 innings pitched and six strikeouts.

Junior righty Ben Barrett got the final two outs and earned his second collegiate save and first in 2025.

The Seminoles scored multiple runs in the first inning for the third consecutive game, with two runs on Sunday. Sophomore third baseman Cal Fisher opened the scoring with a double that scored Harrelson. Junior catcher Jaxson West quickly followed with a single up the middle that brought home Lodise.

Florida State made it 4-0 in the second with another two runs. Harrelson singled in redshirt freshman left fielder Brody DeLamielleur and, with two outs, Harrelson scored on a fielder's choice grounder thanks to an error.

Mendes retired the first nine batters he faced, with one strikeout in the first, second and third innings. Two reached in the fourth on a leadoff walk and a one-out single, but Mendes struck out the next two to escape the jam.

Lodise then homered off the scoreboard in left to add to FSU's lead in the bottom of the fourth. His third long ball of the season and second in as many games made it 5-0.

Penn got on the board in the fifth with a two-out RBI double. Mendes got a strikeout to end the frame and leave a runner on, which proved to be the final batter he faced.

Junior righty Maison Martinez relieved Mendes to start the sixth. The Quakers added one run to make it 5-2, but the damage was limited. In the seventh, Penn had runners on the corners with one out, but a 4-6-3 double play ended the inning and kept the visitors' deficit to three.

The eighth saw Martinez toss a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts to conclude his 3.0-inning outing. In his second appearance of the season, he allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

In the ninth, Barrett inherited runners on the corners with one out. He got a fielder's choice groundout on his third pitch which scored a run but also recorded the second out. Barrett then struck out a pinch hitter to end the game and preserve the 5-3 FSU win.

Up next, Florida State returns to the road for a midweek matchup at Jacksonville on Tuesday, February 25. First pitch from JU's John Sessions Stadium is at 6 p.m. ET.
