SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The No. 24 Florida State women's basketball team (23-6, 13-4 ACC) upset No. 3 Notre Dame 86-81 on Thursday at the Purcell Pavilion.
The Seminoles defeated the Irish for the second time in program history and first time on the road. In program history, FSU owns 12 wins over teams ranked in the top 5 of the AP poll and just four on the road. It was the highest ranked win since the Noles defeated No. 3 Louisville in Tallahassee on February 21, 2021, 68-59.
Ta'Niya Latson led the Noles with 23 points, hitting 2,000 career points, becoming the third player in ACC history to hit it in her first three seasons. Latson also landed the all-time free throw record, passing Sue Galkantas. Latson came up big in the second half, scoring 22 points.
Makayla Timpson also completed 22 points and 17 rebounds, landing her 15th double-double of the season and 46th of her career. Timpson also passed Natasha Howard's mark (1,046) and now owns the FSU career rebounding record (1,058).
O'Mariah Gordon added 15 points and three assists.
After a tightly contested start where the Noles took turns scoring with the Fighting Irish, Gordon and Malea Williams both sunk a three-pointer each. With Notre Dame on a run, FSU wrapped up the first in a 23-14 deficit.
In the second quarter, the Noles caught fire with six three-pointers, three by Carla Viegas, fueling a 13-point run to go ahead, 44-40 to go into the half.
The Seminoles maintained their momentum, holding onto a 67-57 lead as they entered the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Notre Dame battled back, cutting the deficit to just one point with a little over six minutes remaining.
With four minutes left, Timpson sank a jumper off an assist from Latson, drawing a foul to push the lead back to six. The Noles kept the pressure on, adding crucial points down the stretch and ultimately securing an 86-81 victory.
This Sunday, No. 24 Florida State will head home to wrap up the regular season to face No. 16 Duke (22-7, 13-4 ACC) on Senior Day at Donald L. Tucker Civic Center at 6 p.m. on ACC Network.
