Weekend Begins with Ninth Consecutive Win

2/28/2025 9:23:00 PM | Baseball

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 7 Florida State baseball team opened a three-game series against Georgetown with a 7-2 victory on Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium.

One of 11 teams left without a loss in 2025, FSU extended its season-opening win streak to nine games. Florida State is victorious in nine or more consecutive games to start a season in back-to-back years for first time since the 2018 (14) and 2019 (12) campaigns.

The Seminoles (9-0) took an early 2-0 lead in the third inning on junior shortstop Alex Lodise's fourth home run of the season. While the Hoyas (3-6) tied it up in the fifth, FSU responded to regain the advantage with a run in the sixth. Florida State tacked on four insurance runs in the seventh, half an inning after junior right-handed reliever Maison Martinez came in and stranded the bases loaded.

Martinez earned his first career save with 2.2 shutout innings in relief. He allowed one hit with five strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore righty John Abraham collected the win, as he did not allow a hit, struck out two and walked two in 1.1 innings. He improved to 2-0 in 2025 and 7-2 in his career. Junior left-handed starter Jamie Arnold got a no-decision, his first this season, and allowed two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in 5.0 innings. The two runs and two walks were both the first that Arnold has allowed in 16.0 innings in 2025.

Lodise led the way offensively and had a team-high three hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Freshman first baseman Myles Bailey added two hits and one RBI in the victory.

FSU scored its seven runs on 12 hits and Georgetown plated two runs on five hits. Both teams committed an error.

Georgetown put a runner on in the first with a one-out double, but Arnold got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. He struck out the side in the second and stranded another in the third after a two-out walk, the first free pass the junior lefty has issued this year.

As they have done every game this season, the Seminoles scored first on Lodise's two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. His third homer in four games scored freshman left fielder BJ Gibson, who led off the inning with a walk. One game after he notched his first collegiate hits, Gibson made his first start.

The Hoyas got on the board in the fourth with a sacrifice fly. The inning started with a leadoff double, and Arnold got a strikeout to end the frame. The visitors tied it at 2-2 in the top of the fifth as a two-out single up the middle scored one. Arnold got a lineout to end the inning, which was the final batter he faced.

Following a 1-2-3 sixth for Abraham, Florida State regained the lead in the bottom half. With one out, junior catcher Jaxson West singled down the left-field line and advanced to third on a throwing error. He scored on a sacrifice fly by junior second baseman Drew Faurot.

The Hoyas loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with one out, but Martinez came in and got a strikeout and a fielder's choice groundout to strand the maximum.

The Seminoles loaded the bases themselves in the bottom half and converted to score four runs with the help of two wild pitches to extend the lead to 7-2. With one out, the first wild pitch plated Lodise. A walk followed to put three on again for another wild pitch that brought in junior center fielder Max Williams. Another walk again loaded the bases for Bailey, who reached on an infield single that scored freshman designated hitter Hunter Carns. A groundout from Gibson brought in Faurot for the fourth and final run.

Martinez then struck out two in a perfect eighth. He added two more punchouts in the ninth to preserve the win and 2.2-inning save.

The three-game series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. before the finale on Sunday at 11 a.m. Tickets are available for both games at Seminoles.com/Tickets or by calling the FSU ticket office at 850-644-1830. Admission is free for all FSU students with their I.D., and the student entrance is at the right field gate at Haggard Plaza.
