Seminoles' Comeback Effort Falls Short Against No. 18 Alabama

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida State men's tennis team fell 4-3 in its comeback effort against No. 18 Alabama at the Indoor Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.

The Seminoles played in their tightest doubles round all season before Joshua Dous-Karpenschif and Erik Schiessl won four consecutive games to complete a remarkable 6-4 comeback on Court 2. The pairing have won five consecutive matches and earned its second ranked victory of the spring. Jamie Connel and Jan Sebesta fought hard on Court 3 but lost the set tiebreaker to concede the doubles point.

The two sides could hardly be separated throughout the day as all six singles matches were split across the first and second sets, forcing three sets on all courts. Florida State won the first sets on Courts 1-3 while pushing back with second set victories on Courts 4-6.

Facing a 3-0 team match deficit, Schiessl responded with the first singles win for the Seminoles on Court 4. Schiessl erased his 6-2 first frame loss with a 6-2 set of his own before trading blows to set up the third set tiebreaker. Schiessl dug deep and emerged victorious, earning his first win against a ranked team since joining the Seminoles.

The remaining back courts each found renewed momentum, Youcef Rihane swung his third set around and pulled through with a 6-4 frame while Dous-Karpenschif finished his match with authority, winning the final two games at 5-5 to win his match and tie the team match at 3-3. Alabama won the final two games on Court 3 to clinch the team match.

FSU concluded its nine-match homestand and will await another ranked battle at No. 14 Texas A&M on Saturday, February 23. Live video and stats will be available on Seminoles.com
