Wiggins' Career-High Leads Seminoles To 88-80 Victory Over Stanford For Second Consecutive ACC Victory

TALLAHASSEE – Chauncey Wiggins scored 23 points to lead five Seminoles in double-figure scoring in Florida State's 88-80 win over the Stanford Cardinal at the Donald L. Tucker Center. Wiggins's 23 points set a new career-high scoring mark. Robert McCray V (19 points), Lajae Jones (18 points), Alex Steen (12 points), and Kobe MaGee (10 points) rounded out the Seminoles who finished with double-digits.

Florida State improved to 10-12 overall and 3-6 in ACC play. Stanford fell to 14-8 overall and 3-6 in the ACC.

Florida State's victory over Stanford marked its second consecutive victory after defeating Cal, 63-61, on Wednesday night at home.

The Seminoles built a 19-point lead in the second half, marking its biggest lead in any of their nine ACC games this season.

The Seminoles controlled the paint, outscoring the Cardinal 38-30 . Florida State outscored both Stanford and Cal in the paint in their wins over the Cardinal and the Bears this week.  The Seminoles also capitalized on their opponent's turnovers. Florida State forced Stanford into 11 turnovers, seven of which were Florida State steals, and scored 18 points off of those turnovers.

Jones opened the game with a dunk coming to him from the tip-off.

Jones scored 13 of his 18 points in the first half. In addition to his scoring, Jones added five rebounds and two assists to his night.

Stanford held a 22-17 lead with 11:26 left to play in the first half. The Seminoles responded with a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 26-24 lead.

Florida State held a 33-30 lead with just over five minutes to play in the half. The Seminoles closed on a 7-3 scoring advantage over Stanford.

The Seminoles held a 41-33 lead at halftime.

The Cardinal came out of halftime swinging and scored the first three points of the second half to cut the Florida State lead to five, 41-36, with 19:05 to play.

Florida State responded and extended its lead to seven, 45-38, at the 17:38 mark of the second half. Wiggins made back-to-back 3-point shots to bolster the Seminoles' lead to 10.

Wiggins led the Seminoles with 16 second-half points, the most he has scored in a half this season. He finished his night with four made 3-point shots, made seven of eight free throws, and added three rebounds. He has now made three or more 3-point shots in consecutive games and eight times this season.

Florida State held a 53-44 lead with just over 15 minutes to play. MaGee scored five straight points to extend the Seminoles' lead to 12, 56-44.

MaGee made two 3-point shots and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. He led the team in rebounds for the third time this season. MaGee has made multiple 3-point shots in 13 games this season.

The Seminoles rode this momentum to a 10-0 run, ballooning their lead to 19, 63-44, capped by a Steen slam.

Steen was a perfect five-of-five from the field and added four rebounds and three assists.

The Cardinal would make a late run to cut the Florida State lead to nine, 83-74, with just under two-minutes to play before McCray V slammed home a dunk to seal the victory for the Seminoles.

In addition to his 19 points, McCray V dished out a game-high seven assists, grabbed four rebounds, and added two steals. He has led the team in assists in 20 games this season and leads the ACC in total assists.

Freshman guard Ebuka Okorie led Stanford with 26 points and four assists.

Florida State travels to play Notre Dame at the Purcell Pavilion on Saturday, February 7, at 4:00 p.m.
