TALLAHASSEE – The No. 24 Florida State soccer team earned a 2-1 win at Pitt on Sunday afternoon at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh to conclude a two-game road weekend.
With the victory, the Seminoles (7-1-3, 3-0-2 ACC) extend their unbeaten streak to seven consecutive games, with the last four coming on the road, and have won three in a row. FSU took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute before doubling the advantage in the 54th. The Panthers (7-7-2, 1-6-1 ACC) got their lone goal in the 81st minute.
Senior defender Grace Hoytink and senior midfielder Joelle Jung both had a goal and an assist, as Jung scored the opener, assisted by Hoytink, and Hoytink netted the eventual game winner, assisted by Jung and junior forward Shaneil Buckley.
Hoytink's goal is the first of her career, and the assist is her first as a Seminole and 10th of her four-year career. It is Hoytink's first career multi-point game. Jung's goal and assist are both her second of the season, and she now has 10 goals and 16 assists in her career. Buckley's assist is the second of her inaugural D-I campaign.
Buckley led the team with three shots, while Hoytink had a game-high-tying two shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Kate Ockene made four saves and Pitt's keeper stopped two shots.
The Panthers had 14 shots, five on goal, and the Seminoles had nine shots, four on target. FSU held a 3-2 edge in corners and the visitors had one more foul called against them, for a 9-8 margin.
Florida State improves to 16-0-0 all-time vs. Pitt, including 6-0-0 on the road.
Ockene's first save of the game came in the ninth minute and the Panthers had a shot forced high a minute later.
Jung gave the Seminoles a 1-0 lead at 15:36. The play began with a pass to Buckley just inside the corner of the 18-yard box, and she fired a shot to the far post that was saved thanks to a leaping effort from the Pitt keeper. Hoytink fired the rebound on goal, which also was saved. The ball bounced to a running Jung at the top of the goal box, and she quickly fired a right-footed shot to the left side of the net for the goal.
The Panthers had two more shots forced off target in the half, which proved to be the only two other chances in the opening 45 minutes.
Pitt had a 5-4 advantage in shots in the first half, though shots on goal and corners were both 2-1 in FSU's favor.
Ockene made a nice save less than two minutes into the second half, and two more off-target shots followed.
Florida State extended its advantage to 2-0 at 53:28 thanks to Hoytink's first career goal. Buckley passed the ball to Jung, who quickly returned it to a sprinting Buckley as she entered the left side of the penalty area. Near the goal line but outside the goal box, Buckley centered the ball past the goalkeeper to a sprinting Hoytink at the far post. As she fell to the turf with a defender at her side, Hoytink buried the ball into the open net.
A nice save was made by Ockene just over a minute later, and Pitt's keeper stopped a shot by junior forward Wrianna Hudson that would've made it 3-0. In the 65th minute, Ockene made her best save of the day to keep it a 2-0 game.
