Opening Weekend Continues Sunday Night in Miami

TALLAHASSEE – The No. 4 Florida State soccer team continues its season-opening weekend at FIU on Sunday, August 16, in Miami.
Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. ET at Leyva Family Field at FIU Soccer Stadium.

Coming off a 4-0 win at Stetson to open 2026 on Thursday night, Florida State is 1-0-0 on the season and unbeaten in 11 consecutive games dating back to the end of last year. FSU extended its unbeaten streak to 34 in regular-season non-conference games, a stretch that began in the middle of the 2019 non-conference season.
In season-opening games, the Seminoles won their third consecutive and are unbeaten on opening day since 2008. FSU is 4-0-1 when opening the year as defending national champions, with four of those five coming on the road.
Florida State's four goals have come from four different players, three of them newcomers, and three have one assist, all first-year Seminoles. That includes senior forward Tanner Strickland, who has a goal and an assist for a team-best three points. Sophomore goalkeeper Kate Ockene got the shutout on Thursday, her sixth career clean sheet, all in the last eight games dating back to the end of the 2025 campaign.
NATIONALLY-RANKED SEMINOLES
Florida State begins the campaign ranked No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason poll, while Top Drawer Soccer has FSU No. 1. The ACC took the top four spots in the national coaches' rankings. The Seminoles are in the top-10 in the preseason coaches' poll for the 20th time in the last 21 seasons. The ACC Coaches Poll also tabbed FSU at No. 4.
SERIES HISTORY VS. FIU
Florida State boasts a 7-0-0 record all-time against FIU, with a 5-0-0 mark at home and a 2-0-0 record on the road. The series began with a 1-0, double-overtime home win in 1998, which started a stretch of four consecutive years where the two teams squared off, twice in Tallahassee and twice in Miami. Two more home wins followed, in 2004 and 2008, before a 16-year hiatus. The series returned with a 2-0 win in 2025, the third consecutive clean sheet and fifth overall for the Seminoles. A 5-0 win in 2008 is the largest margin of victory. In Miami, it was 3-0 in 1999 and 4-1 triumph in 2001.
One year ago, Florida State beat FIU 2-0 on August 17, 2025, in Tallahassee. Concluding the opening weekend of play with their second shutout in as many games, Wrianna Hudson scored the game winner in the 32nd minute. FSU held the Panthers, who made their season debut in the game, without a shot. The home side registered 13 shots, five on goal, and had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
FIU is 0-0-1 on the season after a 1-1 draw at Florida Atlantic on Wednesday night in Boca Raton. After a goalless first half, the home-side Owls took a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute only for the visitors to tie it less than five minutes later. FIU held a 7-4 advantage in shots and doubled up the shot-on-goal total, 4-2. Sunday's game will be FIU's home opener in Miami.
LAST TIME OUT: SEASON-OPENING WIN
Florida State began its national championship defense with a 4-0 win at Stetson on August 13 in DeLand. The Seminoles scored all four goals in the second half, including the first three in just under 10 minutes, to secure the in-state win. Improving to 10-0-0 all-time vs. SU, FSU is 3-0-0 in DeLand. All but one game has been a Seminole shutout, while the 4-0 triumph matches FSU's largest margin of victory on the road in the series.
Florida State's first three goals, and all three assists in the contest, were recorded by newcomers. Junior midfielder Sam Erbach netted the season's first goal in the 58th minute and senior forward Tanner Strickland doubled the score with a penalty kick goal in the 66th minute. Just under two minutes later, senior midfielder Joelle Jung made it 3-0. Junior midfielder Peyton McGovern scored her first career goal in the 82nd minute for the 4-0 final.
Florida State out-shot Stetson 18-2 with a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks were 2-1 to the visitors, and the Hatters had 10 fouls to the Seminoles' seven. Junior forward Wrianna Hudson had a game-high four shots, all on goal. Ockene stopped both shots she faced and Stetson's keeper made nine saves, six in the first half to keep it a goalless game through the first 57-plus minutes. Twenty-two FSU players saw action in the win, all but three for at least 36 minutes and no one except Ockene for more than 62.
