Seminoles Fall in Four-Set Battle With No. 10 Florida

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida State volleyball team (5-5) fell to No. 10 Florida (8-1) 3-1 Friday night inside Tully Gymnasium.
The Seminoles battled throughout the four-set match, finishing even with the Gators with 58 kills and 61 digs.
Senior outside hitter Kyleene Filimaua led the Seminoles with 12 kills, 15 digs and three blocks for her fifth double-double of the season. Freshman outside hitter Sofia Moss added 11 kills and 11 digs for her third career double-double.
Junior opposite hitter Bailey Higgins recorded 10 kills while hitting a team-best .455, while sophomore opposite hitter Lexie Mason also finished with 10 kills. It marked the first time since FSU's 3-2 win over No. 16 Kansas on Sept. 4 that the Seminoles had four players record double-digit kills.
Florida took an early 6-2 lead in the opening set before the Seminoles began to chip away. FSU pulled within three at 12-9 before Florida extended its advantage to 15-9. The Seminoles continued to battle, eventually cutting the deficit to one at 19-18. Filimaua followed with a kill to tie the set at 19-19, and the teams continued to trade points down the stretch. Florida pulled ahead late and took the opening set, 25-22.
The Seminoles responded in the second set, overcoming an early 7-3 deficit. FSU used a run to even the score at 10-10 before taking its first lead at 13-12. Florida answered to tie the set at 14-14, but the Seminoles regained control. A Filimaua block helped FSU build a 19-17 advantage, and Moss closed out the set with a kill to give the Seminoles a 25-21 win and tie the match at 1-1.
FSU carried its momentum into the third set, taking an 8-5 lead. Florida battled back to even the score at 9-9, and the teams continued to exchange points. The Seminoles opened a 15-12 advantage and later led 19-17, but the Gators responded to tie the set at 19-19. Florida took a late 22-20 lead, but FSU fought back to tie the set at 23-23. The teams continued to battle into extra points, with the score reaching 24-24 before Florida ultimately claimed the set, 27-25, to take a 2-1 match lead.
The Gators jumped ahead early in the fourth set, but the Seminoles stayed within striking distance, cutting the deficit to one at 10-9. Florida built its lead to 18-13 before FSU answered with back-to-back kills to pull within two at 20-18. Florida regained control late and closed out the fourth set, 25-20, to secure the 3-1 victory.
Florida State will open ACC play at home next week, hosting Miami on Wednesday. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be broadcast on ACC Network. Live stats will be available on Seminoles.com.
