Seminoles Rally Past Miami in Five-Set ACC Opener

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida State volleyball team (6-5, 1-0 ACC) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Miami (2-8, 0-1 ACC) 3-2 in its ACC opener Wednesday night inside Tully Gymnasium. The victory marked Florida State's sixth consecutive win in a conference opener.
Florida State finished with 58 kills to Miami's 51 and held the Hurricanes to a .088 hitting percentage. The Seminoles also recorded a season-high 14 blocks and held a 7-1 advantage in aces.
Senior outside hitter Kyleene Filimaua led the Seminoles with a match-high 21.5 points, 18 kills and team-high 15 digs. Freshman outside hitter Sofia Moss added a career-high 16 kills and 11 digs.
Junior opposite hitter Bailey Higgins and junior middle blocker Delaney Ewing each recorded a match-high seven blocks, with Higgins setting a career high and Ewing recording a season high.
Junior setters Emma Lilo and Callie Kieffer combined for 49 assists, with Lilo finishing with 28 and Kieffer adding 21.
Miami opened the match with an early advantage, but Florida State quickly responded and took its first lead at 5-4. The Seminoles continued to build momentum, pulling ahead 11-8 before closing the set on a 14-6 run to take the opener 25-14.
The Hurricanes controlled the second set, jumping ahead 6-1 and extending the advantage to 11-4. Florida State continued to chip away at the deficit, cutting Miami's lead to 15-10 but the Hurricanes held on to take the set 25-22 and even the match at 1-1.
The third set remained close early, with the teams tied at 3-3 before Miami took an 8-5 lead. Florida State answered with a 4-1 run to even the score at 9-9, but the Hurricanes eventually created separation at 17-13. Miami maintained the advantage and claimed the set 25-22 to take a 2-1 lead.
Florida State responded in the fourth set, opening with a 5-2 advantage. Miami battled back to even the score at 10-10, and neither team was able to pull away as the set remained tied at 19-19. With the Hurricanes taking a 24-23 lead, the Seminoles fought off match point and scored three of the next five points to win 26-24 and force a fifth set.
Miami jumped ahead 5-2 in the final set, but Florida State responded with a 6-2 run to take an 8-7 lead. The Seminoles continued to build their advantage and closed out the match 15-11 to secure the 3-2 comeback victory.
Florida State will travel to Miami on Sunday for a second consecutive meeting between the two teams. First serve is set for 1 p.m. on ACCNX.
