Confidence Changed Everything for Sophia Fullbrook

Sophia Fullbrook didn't know exactly what to expect when she began her sophomore season at Florida State.

With All-Americans Lottie Woad and Mirabel Ting embarking on professional careers, Fullbrook found herself among the most experienced players on a young Seminole roster.

The lineup was changing. Her role was changing. But she had something to lean on. She had spent her freshman season watching two of the best players in the country go about their business.

"Having that experience of my freshman year with [Lottie and Mirabel] was definitely very useful," Fullbrook said. "Seeing the way that they go about doing things at a higher level."

So, she followed the example she had been given while trying to find the balance between holding herself accountable and not placing too much pressure on herself.

That balance became a defining part of Fullbrook's sophomore season.

And eventually, so did the confidence.

A Breakthrough at Home
Fullbrook's game was trending in the right direction long before she claimed her first collegiate title.

She had put together several strong performances in her second season at FSU, recording top 10 finishes in four of her first six tournaments. Then came the home event, the Florida State Match Up at Seminole Legacy Golf Club.

It was a course Fullbrook knew intimately. She played it almost every day, understanding how it set up for her game, and entered the week with a feeling that something good could happen.

"I definitely had a good vibe about the week," she said. "I know my game really suits our course."

She was right.

Fullbrook dominated the field, winning by five strokes for her first collegiate victory.

"It was incredible," she said. "Winning that, my first collegiate event, was definitely a big boost in confidence."

The victory meant more than a first collegiate title. It gave Fullbrook the confidence to believe she could win again.

She didn't have to wait long to find out.

Fullbrook followed her breakthrough with another individual title at the Coach Mo Classic, sharing medalist honors after finishing four under par at the last regular season event.

Back-to-back tournaments. Back-to-back victories.

"I would say it was all about confidence for me and knowing that once I'd got a win under my belt, that I could go and do it again and go and do it against different teams as well," she said.

Proving It Again
That mindset followed Fullbrook into the postseason, where the test would come on familiar ground.

Fullbrook and the Seminoles returned to Seminole Legacy Golf Club for the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, with a spot in the NCAA Championship on the line. Once again, she found herself in contention.

Fullbrook was three under through 36 holes and in a three-way tie for fourth entering the final round. She then delivered her best round of the tournament, firing a four-under 68 to climb the leaderboard and finish as co-champion of the regional.

Her third title (in her last four events) helped lead Florida State to a second-place finish, securing the Seminoles' 10th consecutive NCAA Championship appearance.

Winning her first collegiate tournament on her home course had been a breakthrough. Winning there again, this time with an NCAA Championship berth on the line, offered something even more valuable: confirmation.

"It was great that we were at home, but then it also came with a level of expectation for us to do well," Fullbrook said. "So, I think the team going out there and proving that we deserve a spot was huge."

For Fullbrook, the confidence she continued to build followed her to the NCAA Championship in California, which presented a different kind of challenge with the field among the very best in the country.

But she didn't see it as something beyond her ability.

"I knew that I was playing well," she said. "The nationals course, it's hard, but I wouldn't say it's any harder than Seminole [Legacy], what we play every day."

She trusted the game that had carried her through the spring and relied on the same approach that had become so effective: plotting her way around the course and letting her game take over.

Fullbrook ultimately tied for 20th at the NCAA Championship, closing her sophomore season with another strong effort on the sport's biggest collegiate stage.

Taking Confidence to the Curtis Cup
Fullbrook's belief in herself extended into the summer when she earned a spot on the Great Britain and Ireland team for the Curtis Cup.

Her recent success helped her arrive with a different mindset.

"Having a couple of wins under my belt was just a really big confidence boost that I belonged on the team, and I'd proven myself," Fullbrook said. "I thought to myself, there's no one out here that I don't stand a chance of beating if I play well."

That thought held true as Fullbrook claimed four points for the R&A.

The player who had once watched Woad and Ting to learn what competing at an elite level looked like was now standing on an international stage believing, and proving, she belonged there herself.

The Next Step
Now, Fullbrook enters her junior season, not trying to figure out where she fits but rather knowing what she is fully capable of.

"I feel good, I feel confident and I feel confident with the team," she said. "I think we're going to have a good, good season."

And the goals are straightforward.

"Definitely just trying to get as many wins as I can and team wins as we can," she said. "But really just improve on what I did last year and just continue getting better."

That's the next step for Fullbrook.

More wins. More growth. More belief.
