Florida State enters the weekend after winning the last two games against North Florida, sweeping Sunday’s doubleheader by a combined score of 22-11. Catcher Mat Nelson hit two home runs, with Reese Albert and freshman third baseman Vince Smith each hitting one home run. Smith’s three-run home run Sunday was his first hit as a Seminole.
Designated hitter Tyler Martin went 6-for-8 with a double, four walks, a hit by pitch and five runs scored. His .750 batting average and .786 on-base percentage are both the best in the ACC.
Shortstop Nander De Sedas hit .500 (4-for-8) with a double, while right fielder Robby Martin hit 4-for-10 and drew four walks.
The Seminoles will utilize the same rotation on the mound as opening weekend, with Montgomery and Grady following Messick. Montgomery, a freshman from Windermere, Florida, did not allow an earned run in 4.0 innings in his Seminole debut. Grady pitched 5.1 innings and allowed two runs to earn the win in the rubber match.
Senior Chase Haney, wearing No. 11 this season to honor former coach Mike Martin, made two appearances over opening weekend, picking up his second career save in the final game of the series. Haney ranks fifth in FSU history with 109 career pitching appearances.
Pitt enters the weekend having won three straight, taking the final two games of the series against Indiana State and winning at Jacksonville on Tuesday night. Former Seminole pitching coach Mike Bell, who was a pitcher for the Seminoles in 1994-95 and a coach from 2012-18, is in his third season as head coach of Pitt.
Bell and current Seminole head coach Mike Martin, Jr. were teammates at Florida State and coached together for seven seasons before Bell left for Pitt. When the teams faced off in 2019, Bell’s first season, FSU won two of three in Tallahassee.
