2024 All-ACC Academic Men's Basketball Team
WHY I WEAR MY NUMBER
I wear No. 20 at Florida State as a tribute to my favorite all-time player, Ray Allen. Ray Allen has been my favorite all-time shooting guard since I was 10 years old. I’ve worn 20 my whole basketball career because of him.
Josh Nickelberry is the 13th player in school history to earn uniform No. 20. The number was worn by Andrew Wilson (2002-06), who played on Head Coach Leonard Hamilton’s first team at Florida State in 2003. He is currently in his second season as the Head Coach at VMI.
WHAT'S IN A NAME
My full name is Joshua Darren Nickelberry. My grandmother liked the name Joshua from the Book of Joshua in the Bible, and asked my parents to give me that as my first name. My grandmother was battling an illness during my mother’s pregnancy with me. Biblically, Joshua was the assistant to Moses, who later became his successor. Joshua translates to “Jehovah is Salvation.” My middle name, Darren, is my uncle’s (my mother’s bother) first name.
MY HOMETOWN
My hometown of Fayetteville, N.C. is best known as the home to the Fort Bragg Military Base. It’s a small town and very family-orientated where everyone is treated with love and respect.
