WHY I WEAR MY NUMBER
There is no significance, other than I think it’s a cool-looking number, as to why I wear No. 44.
Max Thorpe is just the 12th player in school history, and the first since the 2002 season, to wear the No. 44 for the Seminoles. Lawrence McCray (1972-74) wore No. 44 as a sophomore starter for the Seminoles’ 1972 NCAA Finalist team. He averaged 12.0 points and 8.2 rebounds in leading the Seminoles to a 27-6 overall record and victories over Minnesota, Kentucky and North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament before the Seminoles fell to No. 1 ranked UCLA in the 1972 NCAA Championship game.
WHAT'S IN A NAME
My full name is Maxwell Jesse Thorpe. My parents named me Max because they liked the name from the book Where The Wild Things Are. I got my middle name Jesse from my great grandfather Dr. Bertram Jesse Thorpe.
MY HOMETOWN
My hometown of Clearwater, Fla. is famous for having the world’s best beaches. It’s a diverse and large city, and when combined with St. Petersburg and Tampa, is one of the most active and fun places to live in the United States. Two great Seminoles — Okaro White and Luke Loucks – are from Clearwater.
ON THORPE
Completed his four-year career as a Seminole and earned two degrees from Florida State – a bachelor’s degree in sport management in 2023 and a graduate coaching certificate in Athletic Coaching in 2024…a member of the Seminoles’ 2021 NCAA Tournament team which advanced to the Sweet 16…helped the Seminoles to NCAA Tournament victories over both UNC Greensboro and Colorado to send Florida State to the Sweet 16 for the third consecutive tournament in 2021...a valuable member of the Green Team – Florida State’s scout team who works to prepare the Seminoles for each game during the season…helped lead the Tampa Tarpons AAU team to over a dozen championships including a National Championship and a championship at the Disney Invitational…named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024…named to the NABC Academic Honors Court in 2023 and 2024…earned two awards at Florida State’s Annual Honors Banquet hosted by Head Coach Leonard Hamilton and his staff in 2022...named as an Outstanding Academic All-Star and earned a J.U.I.C.E Award (Just Us In Combat Everyday) as a valuable member of the Seminoles’ Green Team.
AS A SENIOR (2024)
Averaged 0.0 points and 0.0 rebounds in three games played during the 2023-24 season…appeared in three games including victories over Kennesaw State (Nov. 10), Central Michigan (Nov. 13) and against Miami in ACC play at the Donald L. Tucker Center (March 9)...his playing time against Central Michigan helped the Seminoles win the first of three games in the Sunshine Slam…the Seminoles defeated Central Michigan, UNLV and No. 18 Colorado to win the championship of the tournament in Tallahassee and Daytona Beach…his appearance in the Seminoles’ 83-75 win over Miami was marked the fourth ACC game of his career…tied his ACC career-high of two minutes played in the Seminoles’ Senior Day victory over the Hurricanes.
AS A JUNIOR (2023)
Averaged 0.0 points and 0.3 rebounds in three games played during the 2022-23 season...earned playing time in victories over Louisville (Dec. 10) and USC Upstate (Dec. 13) at the Donald L. Tucker Center and against Clemson on the road in ACC play (Feb. 15)...his season-high of two minutes of playing time came against the Cardinals and the Tigers...his two ACC games played against Louisville and Clemson rank tied as his single-season career high for ACC games played in a single game...earned one rebound against Louisville as the Seminoles defeated the Cardinals, 73-53.
SUMMER 2022 – CANADIAN EXHIBITION TOUR
Averaged 0.0 points and 0.7 rebounds (2 total rebounds) in three games played during the Seminoles’ 10-day tour of Canada in August of 2022…totaled 2 rebounds (both defensive) and 1 assist in Florida State’s 86-66 win over Ottawa in the first of three exhibition games during the summer of 20222…earned 2 minutes of playing time in the Seminoles’ win…totaled 0 points and 0 rebounds in 3 minutes of playing time in Florida State’s 98-64 win over Carleton in game two of its Canadian Exhibition Tour…earned 1 minute of playing time in Florida State’s 90-74 win over McGill University in the final game of Florida State’s three-game tour of Canada…the Seminoles finished 3-0 on the 10-day trip north of the border.
AS A SOPHOMORE (2022)
Averaged 0.0 points and 0.0 rebounds while playing in a career-high five games...helped Florida State to a 17-14 overall record and a 10-10 record in ACC play...made his career debut with 1 steal in 3 minutes of playing time in Florida State's 105-70 win over Penn at the Donald L. Tucker Center (Nov 10)...playing time came in wins over Penn, Missouri in the championship game of the Inaugural Jacksonville Classic (Nov. 22), and Lipscomb (Dec. 15) as well as at Duke (Feb. 19) and against Syracuse in the ACC Tournament (March 9)...his playing time at Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium allowed him to earn playing time in an ACC game for the first time...earned one minute of playing time in Florida State's game against Syracuse in the second round of the ACC Tournament at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
AS A FRESHMAN (2021)
A member of Florida State’s 2021 ACC Tournament finalist team and NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 team in his first season as a Seminole…did not play in any games as a first-year player but displayed his desire to help the Seminoles continue their success on the ACC and national levels…helped the Seminoles to an 18-7 overall record and an 11-4 mark in ACC play…the Seminoles finished in second place in the ACC regular season standings, advanced to the championship game of the ACC Tournament, and played in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in his career…the Seminoles were ranked No. 10 in the final USA Today Coaches poll of the 2021 season…a member of Florida State’s acclaimed Green Team which has gained national attention as one of the top scout teams in all of college basketball…the Green Team lists RaiQuan Gray – a 2021 NBA Draft selection of the Brooklyn Nets – as one of the founding members of the group...as a member of the Green Team he illustrates his desire to make the Seminoles a better team each time he practiced with his teammates.
AT CLEARWATER ACADEMY INTERNATIONAL
Played at Clearwater Academy International during the 2019-20 season…helped CAI to a 25-7 record as its team captain in his only season at the school…six players from his CAI team played collegiately during the 2020-21 season…named to the All-Tournament team at the West Florida Post Grad Shootout following his freshman season…graduated from St. Petersburg Collegiate High School in 2020.
AT ST PETERSBURG COLLEGIATE
Graduated from St. Petersburg Collegiate during his senior season in 2020…finished his high school academic career with a 4.16 Grade Point Average…inducted into the National Honor Society.
AT CLEARWATER COUNTRYSIDE HIGH SCHOOL
Attended Clearwater Countryside High School as a freshman, sophomore and as a junior…a member of the varsity team during all three seasons at Clearwater…helped lead Clearwater to the No. 1 ranking in the Tampa Bay area as a sophomore…led the Cougars to consecutive state championship tournament playoff appearances… averaged 8.0 points, 6.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals before a fractured ankle ended his junior season…started every game as a junior until his injury and led the team in three point shooting (.360 percent).
PERSONAL
Born June 4, 2001…Max is the son of Christine and David Thorpe…his father, David, is a noted NBA Player Development Specialist and Life Coach…has a twin sister, Rachel…was born 25 minutes before his twin sister…earned two degrees from Florida State – a bachelor’s degree in sport management and a master’s certificate in Athletic Coaching.
