Steve Shults is in his second year at Florida State after being named FSU's assistant athletics director for compliance in September of 2024.
An experienced compliance professional, Shults spent two years as the associate athletics director for compliance at Ole Miss before moving to Tallahassee. There, his responsibilities included managing the daily operations of the compliance office, supervising assistant directors, overseeing rules education for his assigned sports and leading the athletic department's recruiting and compliance software transfer. He also created a rules education program for workers within and outside of the athletics department and worked with the NCAA and SEC offices on legislative relief waivers and potential violations.
Prior to his time at Ole Miss, Shults spent eight years at NC State serving as assistant athletics director for compliance. He worked with nearly every sport on campus during his time in Raleigh, ensuring proper rules education, adherence to policies and administering the NIL program and financial aid for those sports. He also worked with the Faculty Athletics Representative on certification of eligibility for his assigned sports and was a member of the athletics admissions committee and worked with a committee that provided scholarship funding to former student-athletes returning to complete their degree.
In his four years at UTEP before joining the Wolfpack, Shults worked his way up to assistant athletics director for compliance. He began in 2010 as the Miners' assistant director of compliance. After one year in that role, he was promoted to director of compliance and then one year later was elevated to assistant athletics director for compliance, a role he served in for two years.
Shults began his compliance career as a graduate assistant at Marshall University and spent one year as a compliance specialist at Miami before moving to UTEP. As an undergraduate at UConn, he was a student manager for the Huskies' football team.
Shults earned his bachelor's degree in coaching and sport administration from the University of Connecticut in 2008. He completed his master's degree in athletic administration from Marshall in 2009. He and his wife, Alex, have two boys, Paxton and Carter.
