Seminoles Take Down Lions in Straight Sets

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida State volleyball team (5-4) earned its first sweep of the season Monday night, defeating previously unbeaten North Alabama (10-1) 3-0 in Tully Gym.
In the first meeting between the two programs in Tully Gym and their first matchup since 1976, the Seminoles swept a Lions team that had only dropped two sets in its first 10 matches of the season.
Senior outside hitter Kyleene Filimaua led all players with 17 kills while hitting .429 and adding six digs. Freshman outside hitter Sofia Moss tied her career high with 14 kills and added a match-high 10 digs for her second career double-double.
Sophomore middle blocker Nenu Kpea recorded 10 kills while hitting a match-high .529 and added four blocks. Junior setter Emma Lilo finished with a season-high and match-high 44 assists.
Florida State jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening set and maintained its advantage throughout. North Alabama pulled within two at 16-14, but the Seminoles responded with a 5-1 run to take a 21-15 lead. FSU went on to win the set 25-18.
The Seminoles carried the momentum into the second set, opening with three straight points behind a kill and back-to-back blocks. North Alabama later tied the set at 7-7 before Florida State pulled away with a 6-1 run to take a 13-8 lead. The Seminoles extended their advantage to 22-15 before closing out the set 25-18 on a kill from Filimaua.
North Alabama opened the third set with a strong response, and the teams battled to a 9-9 tie. The Lions took a 16-11 lead, but a 6-2 FSU run and a Filimaua kill later tied the set at 18-18, and the Seminoles took control late, moving ahead 24-21 before Kpea finished the match with a kill to secure the 25-21 third-set victory and the 3-0 sweep.
Florida State remains at home Friday night when it hosts No. 10 Florida. First serve is set for 7 p.m. on ACCN.
