HANAHAN, S.C. –
Junior All-American Caroline Westrup led the Florida State women’s golf team to an eighth place finish in the team standings at the fall 2007 season opening Cougar Classic at Yeaman’s Hall Golf Club. Westrup finished in a tie for 12th place in the individual standings to mark the eighth consecutive time the two-time All-American has finished as the Seminoles’ leader in an event. She finished eight strokes behind Lisa Maunu of Notre Dame who claimed individualist honors in leading the Fighting Irish to the team championship.
Notre Dame rallied from three strokes down after two rounds to defeat Tennessee by one stroke in the team competition. The Irish entered the event unranked and finished ahead of nine of the top 35 teams in the nation including Florida State which began the event ranked 26th nationally. Maunu earned medalist honors for the first time in her career as she defeated teammate So-Hyn Park by three strokes. Florida State’s Westrup finished eight strokes behind Maunu.
Florida State finished as the second ranked ACC team in the event behind only North Carolina and ahead of NC State, Miami and Maryland.
Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) finished in a tie for 12th place with a three-round total of 218. She climbed into the individual race after shooting a two-under par score of 70 to move into a tie for 12th place after two rounds. Westrup shot a two-over par 74 and was in a tie for 35th place after the first round of the event. She moved into a tie for 12th place in the second round and that’s where she finished as she carded another two-over par 74 in the third round.
Junior Lauren Cousart (Athens, Ga.) played the best round of her Seminole career as she carded a career-low two-under par 70 in the final round. She moved from a tie for 83rd place after two rounds into a tie for 54th place in the final standings with her team-leading score in the third round. Cousart’s pervious career-best score was a 72 in the third round of the spring 2007 Lady Gator Invitational.
Seniors Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) and Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) finished in a tie for 35th place in the individual standings. Brummett finished with a final round 76 for a 228 total while Wright finished with a 228 total after a career-low 68 in the first round of the event. Sophomore Lacey Agnew (Jonesboro, Ga.), who carded a 77 in the second round of the event, finished in a tie for 79th place with a 54-hole total of 238.
Florida State plays in its next event at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Oct. 5-7.
