TALLAHASSEE — Freshman Justin Lyons is assisting the Seminoles during the fall tennis season in his first year at Florida State.
"Justin has a very high ceiling, has shown a lot of improvement in footwork, and is really maturing and growing," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said.
Pairing up with fellow newcomer Azariah Rusher, the duo reached the semifinals of the ITA National Summer Championships. The pair's highlight in the tournament was an upset victory over the No. 3 seeded doubles team in the quarterfinals.
Lyon's three-set 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7) win over Georgia State's Baran Solver marked his first victory at Florida State, and the duo of Rusher and Lyons earned their first doubles victory together on Friday after an 8-5 win at Battle of the Beach tournament in Destin.
"Justin has been playing a very physical game," Hultquist said. "I'm happy to see what he's doing especially after he had a very good weekend at ITA All-American Championships."
Lyons began qualifying with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Middle Tennessee State's Dimosthenis Taramonlis. Lyons advanced to the next round with a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set victory over Hawaii's Quinn Snyder before falling in three sets to UTSA's Alan Magdan.
In singles play, Lyons reached the quarterfinals after recording a pair of wins in the tournament.
Lyons, a Pensacola native, was highly sought after and was a top-30 recruit and ranked in the sixth in the state of Florida.
